We were lucky to catch up with Bell Littell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Bell, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I have ever worked on is the music I am working on and releasing right now. I’ve put out 6 original Pop songs that all stand for something different and are all equally important to me. Some of those songs are about goals and dreams, some are about love, some are about equality and social justice and some are just fun magical pop songs. They’re all so meaningful to me because they all represent these different facets of being a girl that wants something more for herself and the people around her. I like to make music that is optimistic without ignoring the obstacles that we face which can range from self-doubt to systemic issues (I think those 2 can also go hand in hand). I feel empowered, inspired and uplifted when I’m making this music and I hope those same feelings come through to anyone who listens!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Bell Littell and I’m from Houston, Texas. I make mystical Pop music with a side of Americana and I love to write songs about magic, dreams, love and equality. I was a creative kid and I fell in love with music and girlyness before I even gained consciousness. I started writing songs when I was 14, released my first song when I was 20 and I moved to Los Angeles last year at 24 to create my career in music. Since I got to LA, I’ve been performing live and putting out music that will eventually be apart of my debut album. My overall goal with music is to create a creative and diverse space for people, especially girls, to feel inspired, empowered, enchanted and entertained. If I can do that, then I’ve made it!

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
OMG yes! You have to set up systems for yourself. There is a stereotype for artists that paints us as free spirited, disorganized and unrealistic. I think every artist has a different way that they like to create but I’ve found that for me, I thrive on having a system. So, when I get a lyric idea, I write it in my lyric notes and when I have a show coming up, I schedule time for myself to rehearse. I am a type A Capricorn and I wish I had known this sooner because, as artists or business owners, we wear a dozen different hats which feels impossible at first BUT if you’re able to create systems that you can default on, it makes it all so much simpler. And it works just the same for your everyday life.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to create music that inspires the girls to create the life they want for themselves. In love, ambition and everything else. Music has always been what I escaped to when life got too heavy and it was always music made by women who I saw a piece of myself in. That is what makes me want to write songs because I really want to articulate all the different things that we feel currently or have felt growing up. And I want to create a space and a world that just reminds them to trust themselves and to believe in themselves. I love learning these things for myself and then putting them in little potion bottles that we call songs.
