Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ten Smith. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Ten, thanks for joining us today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
The first time I truly felt valued as an artist was when an Atlanta based organization, We Buy Black, reached out to book me as a headliner alongside Grammy winning artist Bilal. I was blown away and honestly terrified because I had never performed on that level before.
When negotiations started, we shared my rate and I remember thinking, ‘There’s no way this is going to happen.’ After some back and forth, they agreed to pay me $3,500 for a 45 minute set. I couldn’t believe it. In that moment, it wasn’t just about the money. It was validation. It meant they truly believed I could stand on a stage next to a Grammy winning artist and hold my own.
That night, I performed in front of nearly 5,000 people, the largest audience I had ever seen from a stage. I walked out nervous but left empowered. After my set, there was a long line of new fans waiting for autographs and photos. I’ll never forget that feeling. That was the moment I stepped into my confidence and realized my gift could truly make room for me.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I create soulful music and live performances that blend the warmth of classic soul with modern expression. My work is centered on connecting deeply with audiences through honest lyrics, powerful vocals, and heartfelt stage presence.
What sets me apart is the timeless feeling of my sound. I don’t just perform songs, I create emotional experiences that allow people to feel seen and inspired.
I’m most proud of building my career through faith and perseverance, growing into an artist whose brand stands for authenticity, women empowerment, and purpose driven artistry. My music encourages people especially women to embrace their voice, their strength, and their journey.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I wish I had known earlier about the power of artist development, mentorship, and understanding the business side of music. When you first start, you focus so much on talent and performance that you don’t always realize how important branding, ownership, and industry knowledge really are.
I also wish I had known more about independent artist resources, funding opportunities, and how to properly protect my creative work. Learning about publishing, royalties, and building a strong team earlier would have saved time and helped me move with more confidence.
Over time, I’ve realized that talent opens doors, but knowledge and guidance help you walk through them wisely.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is the connection. There’s nothing like seeing a song you created from your own life experiences touch someone else’s heart. When people tell me my music helped them heal, feel seen, or find confidence, it reminds me that my purpose is bigger than entertainment.
I also cherish the freedom that comes with being creative. It allows me to turn emotions, stories, and life lessons into something meaningful that can live beyond me.
One thing non creatives may not fully understand is how much faith and emotional investment this journey requires. Being an artist isn’t just a job you clock in and out of. It’s personal. You pour your life into your work, and success often requires pushing through uncertainty, financial ups and downs, and moments of self doubt. What keeps creatives going is purpose. We create because we’re called to, not because it’s easy. It’s a journey built on passion, resilience, and believing in something bigger than immediate results.
