Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Becky Prater. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Becky , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I have been an entrepreneur most of my life. After having all the normal elements of success including plenty of money, solid education, and experience in the industry, I still did not feel very successful. Over time I have discovered that entrepreneurs need to develop their spiritual and emotional intelligence when running a business these days. Sometimes developing SQ and EQ requires exploring the emotional blocks that are getting in the way of our success. I have been working mostly with entrepreneurs using fun techniques to explore and release these blocks.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Becky is an author and Life Transformation coach, who specializes in working with entrepreneurs who have hit a wall and are not moving forward. In one breakthrough session or a six-step guided program, Becky helps people release blocks and beliefs that are interfering with success. As a coach, she guides you through a process of self-assessment and healing. Together, you use Feng Shui vision boarding with powerful intentions, along with an inspired action plan, to create the ideal future for yourself and enlist the law of attraction and the power of The Universe to bring about a future beyond your imagination. She recently published a book on the process, Life Transformed: 6 Steps to a Future Beyond Your Imagination.
Becky uses various techniques for healing including QHHT (Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique), the RIM technique (Regenerating Images in Memory), guided meditation, and Reiki energy healing in her coaching practice. She does group coaching as well as one-on-one sessions with clients locally, nationally and internationally. Through life transformation coaching, Becky helps people find their authentic self, inner voice and life’s purpose.
A serial entrepreneur, Becky understands that to be successful in business you need more than a great business plan and commitment. You need to release the limiting thoughts and behaviors that are getting in your way. You need an over-arching life plan that includes your business or career as well as all the other important aspects of life, like relationships, travel, children, wealth, personal well-being and health. We are multi-dimensional beings who are well served by having a plan that addresses all these dimensions of life.
Becky teaches entrepreneurship at Metropolitan State University in Denver, CO. She is director of the Launch Denver program, a 10-week business boot-camp that serves the MSU and Denver communities. She lives in a funky vintage house in colorful Colorado with her husband. She is an avid traveler and paddle boarder.
Can you talk to us about your experience with selling businesses?
I sold my yoga clothing business in 2016 after being in business since 2005. In fact, my ultimate goal for the business was to sell it once it was valued at 6 million dollars. Some friends of mine sold their company around 2014 for six million, coincidentally. When congratulating them, they said, “Unfortunately, we don’t get to keep all the money. We have to pay off 1.5 million in debt.” I realized at that moment, I was never going to be the person who was 1.5 million in debt. I also realize that an inventory-base business, like I ran, requires that. So, I decided to sell. It took me a few years to get the business ready to sell. I wanted everything to be perfect for the new buyer, to ensure their success. This required me to make sure I had the right amount of inventory, all the styles and patterns to be updated and corrected, and online environment healthy and strong. I did sell the business within the time frame I was hoping and at the price I was hoping for.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
My lesson in entrepreneurship has been about my relationship to money. I grew up with a father who was also an entrepreneur. He often said, “When you make money, the government just takes it from you.” So, that tape played in my head. Also, I was under the impression through my Catholic upbringing that I should be a given not a taker and receiving money fell under the category of taking. Lastly, and this is how I discovered I was repelling money rather than attracting it, I did a guided visualization with money where I was on a stage and the energy of money came onto the stage. I could see myself on the stage as a 7 year old sitting on a stool. I said to money, “No thanks. I am good. I have everything I need.” While that might sound content. My higher self was sitting in the audience screaming, “You have an inventory-based business that requires money. You are not good. You need money. This changed everything for me. Now, taking people through these types of journeys to explore their relationship to money is one of the main things I do with clients. These days, money and I dance together. We co-create a future that is beyond my imagination.
