We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kristin Shim a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kristin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Working at FOX Entertainment as a Creative Coordinator—managing the SVP’s schedule and supporting a 50-person design team—was an invaluable foundation for my career. However, after 18 months, an opportunity arose for an Associate Social Media Manager position.
The transition meant moving from a staff role to a contract position, which was a difficult decision given my natural inclination toward job security. Ultimately, I chose to prioritize creative fulfillment and specialized growth over the safety of a comfortable role. Since starting in September 2025, the last six months have been incredibly enriching. While the nature of contract work has its uncertainties, the deep dive into social marketing and the specialized skills I’ve gained have confirmed that this pivot was the right step for my career trajectory.

Kristin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My journey started in 2006 in my childhood basement in Minnesota, using my dad’s webcam to document my world. Since then, content creation has become a core part of my identity—a digital diary where I’ve spent nearly two decades documenting memories and building community.
This lifelong passion directly paved the way for my career in marketing, leading to my current role as an Associate Social Media Manager at FOX Entertainment. While I lead social strategy by day, I remain a creator at heart, partnering with brands that value authentic vision and voice. Beyond the screen, I am a yoga teacher and former lululemon Brand Ambassador dedicated to building intentional communities, whether in person or online.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I’ve had to embrace is that I won’t be everyone’s cup of tea—and that’s okay. As a recovering people-pleaser, I used to constantly justify other people’s negative behavior, giving the benefit of the doubt to those who didn’t earn it.
I’ve since realized that I can’t please everyone, nor will I necessarily like everyone I meet. It’s natural to want to be liked, but it’s not worth forcing a connection at the expense of being genuine. I’m still unlearning these habits daily, but I’ve become much more intentional about the energy I give and the energy I allow into my space.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creator is watching an idea travel from my imagination to a finished product. My brain is constantly spinning—conceptualizing new content, scenarios, and creative strategies. While the process has its lulls and challenges, there is nothing like the rush of hitting ‘publish.’ I take immense pride in the discipline it takes to take a raw idea and execute it to completion.
