We were lucky to catch up with Cassidy Smith recently and have shared our conversation below.

Cassidy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?

Photography was never something I suddenly decided to do. It was always there, long before it became a business.

I have always been the person behind the camera, documenting vacations, everyday moments, family gatherings, and the in between pieces of life that most people don’t think to capture. I realized early on that photographs meant more to me than just images. They were a way to hold onto feeling. I always found myself scrolling through thousands of photos I had taken over the years, reliving the memories.

After having my daughter, my perspective shifted in a way I didn’t expect. I suddenly understood how quickly seasons of life pass and how deeply parents want to remember the smallest details, the expressions, the connection, and the ordinary days that later become the most meaningful memories. I stepped away from my corporate career and began leaning into photography not just as a hobby, but as something I could offer others.

What made me believe this was a worthwhile endeavor was seeing how people reacted to their images. I realized I wasn’t just taking pictures, I was helping people preserve memories in a way that felt true to their lives. Watching families grow and documenting milestones, knowing these images may someday be the photographs their children look through to remember their own childhood, felt incredibly meaningful.

Building this business felt less like starting something new and more like finally giving a lifelong passion permission to grow into something bigger.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I’m Cassidy Smith, a Connecticut based lifestyle photographer focused on capturing moments that feel true to you. I have always been drawn to documenting people and everyday moments, often realizing later just how meaningful those photographs became. A little over a year ago, I turned this passion into a business without fully knowing where it would take me.
In that time, I’ve had the opportunity to photograph over 100 clients, ranging from families, newborns, and maternity sessions to engagements, weddings, and entrepreneurs. Along the way, I’ve become deeply immersed in a supportive and beautiful community that continues to inspire my work every day.

What sets my work apart is that relationships matter deeply to me. I’m not focused on one time sessions. I love growing alongside families, documenting milestones year after year, and becoming someone they trust to capture important seasons of life. My background in business has also helped me create a client experience that feels organized, thoughtful, and personal from the first inquiry through final gallery delivery.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?

Building my audience on social media really came down to one thing and that’s community. Networking has been everything for me. I truly believe in being a girls’ girl and cheering on the people around me. Supporting other small businesses, photographers, and local creatives has naturally led to meaningful connections and growth.

Engage with people genuinely, support others without expecting anything in return, and don’t be afraid to show your personality and your process. People connect with people first, and the growth follows naturally from there.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

Word of mouth has been incredibly powerful, and that really comes from clients having a positive experience from start to finish.
I’ve also focused on being present within my local community, building relationships with other small businesses, supporting fellow creatives, and showing up both online and in person. I care deeply about the experience I provide.

At the end of the day, I want clients to feel comfortable, valued, and excited to come back year after year, and that trust has been the foundation of my growth!
