We were lucky to catch up with George Yuhasz recently and have shared our conversation below.
George, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
A few years ago I decided to write a novel, RIGHTEOUS ALLEGIANCE, which would focus on the examination of urgent social issues, the insidious growth of division and extremism, and the consequences of radical ideologies in modern American. My decision to write this story was predicated on the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol Building by insurrectionists fueled by stolen election claims, second amendment extremism, and the foundation of white supremacy. Besides extremism, race, politics, and identity were also incorporated in this work of fiction containing elements of drama, covert operations, espionage, suspense, romance, adventure, and more.
I anticipated much criticism, as well as threats in different forms-including physical threats. My anticipation was not unfounded. In all cases, I thanked people for their opinion and for expressing their feelings about the book and for me as the author who wrote it. The threats still continue to come. Am I concerned. Indeed, I am. However, I will continue to write the stories because I feel they need to be told.

George, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into writing because I was inspired to write a children’s story, my first book, for my granddaughter. I had attended her seventh birthday party which was held in her family’s back yard. Rapunzel came and read to the children and played games with them. Observing this scene and knowing how much my granddaughter was fascinated by the night sky, I was inspired to write IMAGINE THAT: THE MAGIC OF THE MYSTERIOUS LIGHTS. I am currently writing another children’s book and am also working on a sequel to my first novel, RIGHTEOUS ALLEGIANCE. Both books have each earned multiple awards and it delights me to know they are being read by a large number of readers.
Someone once asked what I value most as an author/writer. A heavy question. My reply was in effect the following: I believe in holding myself accountable in bringing my best efforts to creating meaningful, thought provoking, and entertaining stories encouraging kindness, love, friendship, hope, and a reverence for our natural world. My profound gratitude to all who continue to support and inspire me on this amazing journey.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I think about legacy a lot these days. It’s a result of being older and having been blessed (In most cases) or cursed (Thankfully not too many of these) by a rich mosaic of life experiences. It is my hope that I am remembered as a storyteller who produced a body of work that was meaningful, entertaining, inspirational, and unique. In the meantime, I constantly strive to grow as a creative and share my joy and love for writing.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is receiving feedback from people who feel they received or experienced something valuable they could relate to their own lives.
