Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to DANIELLE ARMSTRONG. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
DANIELLE, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Taking the leap to start my business was the greatest risk I’ve ever taken — and the most meaningful. For years, I was a driven corporate professional, but deep down I felt creatively unfulfilled and disconnected from the things that once lit me up. In early 2024, during a visit with my father who is bravely battling late-stage dementia, I had a profound moment of clarity about how fleeting and precious life truly is. It shifted everything. I realized that waiting for “someday” to pursue my dreams of art and pastry was a risk in itself.
Within months, I stepped away from the safety of corporate life and founded Decadent & Dainty — blending my formal culinary training with my lifelong love of art to create edible floral works of art. It was terrifying to trade stability for uncertainty, but it has been incredibly rewarding. What began as a leap of faith has become a thriving creative business. Taking that risk didn’t just change my career — it changed how I choose to live my life.

DANIELLE, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Danielle Armstrong, founder and buttercream artist behind Decadent & Dainty. My path into this work wasn’t traditional. I began in corporate America, but creatively I felt unfulfilled. Art has always been part of who I am, and pastry became the medium that allowed me to bring it back into my life.
After formal culinary training, I started treating buttercream as an artistic medium rather than simply decoration. What began as cupcakes evolved into sculpted florals, hand-piped botanical arrangements, and bespoke illustrated add-ons that transform desserts into deeply personal gifts. I don’t see cupcakes as sweets — I see them as canvases.
I create luxury cupcake bouquets and custom dessert experiences for life’s most meaningful moments. My clients come to me when they want something intentional — not just beautiful, but emotionally thoughtful. I solve the “I want this to feel truly special” problem.
What sets my work apart is the intersection of fine art and confectionery. Every floral detail is piped by hand. Every illustration is drawn by me. There is no mass production — only craftsmanship and heart behind each piece.
What I’m most proud of is building a brand rooted in courage, beauty, and connection. Decadent & Dainty isn’t just about cupcakes — it’s about turning fleeting moments into something unforgettable.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is knowing that something created with my hands can become part of someone else’s most meaningful moments. My work often shows up during celebrations, milestones, remembrances, and deeply personal gestures of love. There’s something incredibly special about creating an edible piece of art that makes someone feel seen, celebrated, or comforted.
I also find great fulfillment in the act of creating itself. Transforming buttercream into florals and illustrations into keepsakes allows me to live in a space where art and purpose meet. It’s a constant reminder that beauty and creativity have the power to connect people in ways that words sometimes cannot.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve had to unlearn is the belief that success only comes from following a traditional, predictable path. For much of my career, I lived in the world of structure, stability, and clear expectations. I believed that security and success meant staying on a well-defined professional track, even if it came at the expense of creativity and personal fulfillment.
The turning point came during a deeply personal season of life as my father began battling late-stage dementia. Spending time with him brought a profound clarity about how quickly life changes and how precious time truly is. It made me question why I was waiting for the “right time” to pursue the creative life I had always imagined. That moment forced me to confront the idea that playing it safe can sometimes be the greatest risk of all.
Unlearning that mindset allowed me to step away from predictability and build a life rooted in purpose and creativity. It taught me that success isn’t one-size-fits-all — it can look like choosing joy, meaning, and authenticity, even when the path forward feels uncertain.
