We recently connected with Bennett Netschi and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Bennett thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of my most meaningful projects has to be my work on the short film, Movie Magic (2024). This was the first ever traditional short film I ever wrote and directed. The short film is a mockumentary starring a cast of characters trying to complete a short film. It sounds very meta, but it reflects my own experience throughout my childhood and early adult years. While Movie Magic was the traditional short film I ever worked on, as a kid me and my friends would make video movies all the time. Whether we were dressed up in Batman costumes or thinking of the next horror classic, we were just there to have fun and be creative. The short film they make in the short film is a homage to a home-video movie me and my friends created as kids, and to have recreated certain scenes in the short film was really an awesome experience and it means a lot to me. If you stick around for the end credits you’ll actually catch some footage of that past home movie and how it compares to the new version.

Bennett, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Bennett Netschi, I’m an aspiring filmmaker/videographer based in Memphis with a love of everything A/V production. I’m currently a freshman at the University of Memphis going for my bachelors in Film and Video. As an aspiring filmmaker, I continue to craft multiple short films in an effort to not only tell good stories but get better technical capabilities over my cinematography as well. I also provide videography as a service I can perform. With my equipment and knowledge of editing softwares, I aspire to create the best videos/short films possible for myself and my clients. I also currently post all of my work to social media and my portfolio as well to gain a presence in my community.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
This is a great question. I feel like the general answer is to see your finished work brought over from the page to the big screen. While this is a huge plus of me being a creative, I think the most rewarding aspect of making short films is the process it takes to do so. As someone who’s done this for a while with a lot of different people, I love the sense of camaraderie and collective creativity that sparks every time I’m behind the camera. Whether we’re trying to punch up a joke to make it funnier or sell an action beat harder, working with these amazingly talented people is always such an joy and I’m lucky to call all of them friends.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
For me, the end goal has always been to get somewhere in the movie industry. The ideal goal someday is to be a director or a writer, anyone who can tell their story and bring it to life through the magic of movies. As I’ve discovered the path isn’t always a straight line. In order to set my place in the industry, my drive has been to learn as much about all of the inner workings on a film set as I can to not only become a better leader as a director, but to also potentially have a place in the industry in another position if the end goal doesn’t work out. I think that’s important for creatives in general, to get familiar with a vast array of the jobs in your industry to heighten understanding of your own place in it. I’m still on my journey to get there, but through continued learning I’m hoping to get there someday.
