We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brasen Nix a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brasen, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
My realization of wanting to make music my life-time career/hobby was when I got my first acoustic drum kit at 10 years old. My Dad taught me everything he knew when I was even younger, and since I caught on fairly quick, I tried to teach myself with YouTube videos, but I just felt I wasn’t progressing; I picked up sports for a few years, but it wasn’t really my thing. And after what seemed like forever, I was finally able to go to a music school to help further my development with drumming. Which, eventually turned into learning bass, guitar, and about music in general.

Brasen, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I honestly couldn’t remember a time that I wasn’t passionate about a genre of music. And once I began learning how to see music in a different light, it grew on me even more; Now as a full time musician, I’m currently in two bands that are both going really well, With Europa’s Aligned being Alternative/Progressive rock, and Don Stalling and The Divided being Country/Rock, I’ve really been introduced to new styles of live music, coming from playing in a punk rock band for 2 years.
Its definitely been busier once music became my job, but whether its a studio session, writing, fill-in gig, etc. I’m always on the look out for other great artists or bands to work with. I always try to keep an open mind, because I wouldn’t say that I’m exactly where I want to be yet, but I couldn’t tell you exactly where I want to go, either.
I think my hard work and dedication really pays off. Considering I have opened up for Puddle of Mudd while playing drums for Olive Vox, and played Hank William Jr.’s after party at Gilley’s, Choctaw Casino, with Don Stalling and The Divided. At 17 years old, I am extremely grateful and appreciative for the opportunities that I have been given by the people that have helped me on this journey.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Once I got to where I had to start challenging myself, and my music teacher… I really started getting into Progressive Rock drumming, with Jazz subtleties. There’s just something about that genre that just doesn’t make sense to me and its very intriguing. Bands like Tool, Animals as Leaders, Intervals, Intronaut, Greyhaven, and Snarky Puppy, have been several of my writing inspirations for music.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, as I’ve stating several times, music has always been apart of my life in some way. Striving to be better at my passion for drums has gotten me a full time job as a musician; I really couldn’t ask for anything else.
