Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sarah Vining. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sarah , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
The Hickory Post was born out of an appreciation for feeling at home in every space. As a young girl, my Mom and I would frequent antique and thrift stores; I quickly realized every object has a story. I have a lifelong love for creating spaces that feel layered, thoughtful and alive. I started The Hickory Post with the understanding that I wanted to help people tell their unique life stories in their own homes.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Southerner at heart and have always appreciated feeling at ease in the spaces I find myself. As a young adult working as a Child Life Specialist in the hospital, I realized how much environment matters. In my own apartments, I would thrift items and create art to foster a cohesive space on a budget. I now get to live my dream of helping my clients create an environment that is uniquely theirs.
At The Hickory Post, we offer design and styling services as well as a large assortment of gifts, furniture, local art and clothing. Every item has been thoughtfully selected for the craftsmanship, quality and beauty. We also place a large emphasis on locally made artist driven pieces.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
The Hickory Post started with me buying and selling items on Facebook Marketplace. This was an easy way to test the market and see my idea would work with limited investment. After renting a brick and mortar store, I used Instagram to communicate what treasures were found each week. I really leaned into my unique perspective and personality. I believe authenticity matters and my audience responded.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
With the help of Madds Media Collective, we have created a blog and monthly newsletter. I am always so encouraged to hear how many people read what we work hard to write every month. I use stories from my past and items in my own home to highlight the brand’s perspective, which is your home should tell the story of you over time.
