I remember one particular assignment during a large international event. Thousands of people pressed against barricades, energy high, security stretched thin. All it takes in that kind of environment is one person with bad intentions. One sudden movement. One concealed weapon. In that moment, you’re not thinking about fame or glamour; you’re calculating exits, scanning hands, reading faces, mapping threats in real time. Your body is in front. Always in front.

Being a country boy from Georgia, we start with strength and sports. Fast forward to college playing football, my entry into the industry was from my teammate asking me to work security at a bar where he was the bar back. One night during a club appearance with my client, what started as a routine evening turned chaotic fast.
Tension built between our section and the one next to us, words were exchanged, alcohol was involved, and within seconds it turned physical. Our manager and parts of the team got pulled into a fight. The club erupted. People were shouting, pushing, security scrambling.
In that moment, resilience meant control.
While others reacted, I stayed locked on my responsibility; my client. I immediately separated them from the chaos, positioned myself between them and the fight, and activated our exit plan. The front was compromised, so I moved them quickly through the back kitchen exit; the same entrance we scoped out when we arrived.
We left safely before the situation escalated further.
That night reinforced a core principle of security: resilience isn’t about jumping into every fight; it’s about staying disciplined under pressure and protecting the priority, no matter what’s happening around you.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn was this: Not everyone should be invited into your space.
After a lounge night, we had a woman back at our Airbnb. What we didn’t know was that she had her location on and her boyfriend was tracking her. He suddenly showed up to “retrieve” her. They argued outside and eventually left together.
I didn’t relax. I stayed outside on patrol. Around 3 a.m., just like I suspected, he circled back still thinking she was inside with us.
It was dark, quiet, residential. No backup. I stepped forward, drew my weapon, and firmly instructed him to leave. The situation could have escalated badly, but he chose to drive off.
That night taught me a permanent lesson: security starts long before a threat appears. Who you allow into your environment can either protect your peace or endanger everyone in it.
