We were lucky to catch up with Mike Michelakis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mike, appreciate you joining us today. Can you share an anecdote or story from your schooling/training that you feel illustrates what the overall experience was like?
I had the opportunity to do a lot of hands on experiences with my school degree programs via a number of training internships and research projects. Those opportunities lead to future employment attainment and later on growth which became accolades in the profession.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a health and wellness teacher who has specialized in strength training and fitness coaching over the past 30 years. I have had many opportunities to work in school settings, the club industry, and with performance centers and academy programs. I am now serving in leadership as a consultant and mentor the newer generation of strength coaches and personal trainers.

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
I would follow the same exact path that lead me to the profession that I am in today. My plan while playing college football was to become a strength coach and personal trainer. I have been fortunate and blessed to have had many opportunities to do so. These experiences have paid off too.

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Besides the degrees in Exercise Science and Kinesiology, the Strength and Conditioning and Exercise Physiology certifications have played a big role in the success I have had in the fitness field. Also, having had many different experiences in school settings, fitness gyms, and academy programs have been invaluable to my success in powerlifting coaching and performance training as well.
