We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Roger Woodard. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Roger below.
Hi Roger, thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
I wish I would have started my business sooner. Back in 2015, I was living paycheck to paycheck, constantly worried about the risk of failure and the possibility of not being able to cover my bills. Even though I felt somewhat stable in my career, my confidence was low. Whenever I brought up the idea of opening my own salon, my peers and coworkers would tell me I wasn’t ready, which only reinforced my self-doubt.
Looking back, I realize that people often project their own fears and insecurities onto others. If I had known how successful my business would become, I would have taken the leap much earlier. Starting sooner could have given me a significant head start in life, and the experience of building my salon could have been even more enriching. It’s a lesson in believing in oneself despite what others might say.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Roger Woodard, the proud owner of Studio 27 Hair Salon in San Antonio, Texas. My journey into the beauty industry began with a deep passion for hair and aesthetics, which I nurtured from a young age. After years of honing my skills and gaining experience in various salons, I decided to take the leap and open my own space in 2015.
At Studio 27, we offer a range of services, including haircuts, coloring, extensions, and specialized treatments that cater to diverse hair types. Our focus is on creating personalized experiences for each client, ensuring they leave not just looking great, but feeling confident and empowered. We solve problems like hair damage, style dilemmas, and the search for the perfect look, which often makes clients feel lost or frustrated.
What sets us apart is our commitment to continuous education all over the country and world. Staying updated with the latest trends and techniques is essential to our success. We prioritize building strong relationships with our clients, understanding their unique needs, and offering tailored solutions.
I take immense pride in the community we’ve built at Studio 27—a space where creativity flourishes, and clients feel at home. I want potential clients and followers to know that when they choose us, they’re not just getting a service; they’re becoming part of a family that values authenticity, creativity, and genuine care. Your hair is our canvas, and together, we can create something beautiful.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Studio 27 Hair Salon built its reputation in the market through a combination of several key factors. Quality of service has been our number one priority, ensuring that every client receives exceptional results tailored to their unique needs. This commitment to excellence fosters trust and satisfaction.
Following quality, consistency and reliability have played crucial roles. Clients know they can expect the same high standard each time they visit, which encourages repeat business and positive word-of-mouth referrals. Together, these elements create a solid foundation for our reputation, allowing us to stand out in the competitive beauty industry.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One crucial lesson I had to unlearn was the idea that my clients and employees are my friends. Early in my journey, I approached relationships with an overly familiar mindset, believing that building friendships would enhance loyalty and create a supportive environment. However, this perspective led to challenges I hadn’t anticipated.
The backstory involves several instances where the lines blurred between professional and personal relationships. While I genuinely cared for my clients and employees, I often found myself confronted with unexpected behaviors or conflicts that complicated our interactions. Situations that arose from misunderstandings or differing expectations became more challenging to navigate when emotions were involved.
Over time, I recognized that maintaining a balanced, professional relationship was essential. It allows for clearer communication, better boundaries, and a healthier work environment. I learned that while I can offer support and empathy, it’s important to keep a level of professionalism to ensure that both my business and personal relationships thrive. This shift in perspective has ultimately led to a more productive atmosphere and stronger connections built on mutual respect rather than familiarity.
