We recently connected with Jolie Dopa and have shared our conversation below.
Jolie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
In all honesty, I allow spirit to guide me when I’m creating pieces! Now I will say, when I began creating Wire Bra’s, I definitely watched a tutorial just so that I could have every step covered. When it comes to most of the pieces that I create, I just do it! I visualize in my mind how to make something and then I execute. But the deeper answer is that sewing is in my bloodline! My mother sewed her own clothes, her mother sewed clothes for my aunts and it’s really something my family has turned to to create clothing to represent themselves during times of low income.

Jolie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jolie 🌺 and I’m initially a singer songwriter! I moved to Atlanta for a few years to pursue music and in the meantime became pregnant. I came home to Florida to have my baby and essentially created a new life here. And while creating a new life in Florida, I started developing a large lump in my breast. So I was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer and in order to heal I started doing all the things that I really enjoyed. With designing clothing being one of them, I started making pieces and posting them on social media. I was soon invited to be a vendor at a showcase in Saint Pete, Florida at Coastal Creative. I did very well and at that moment, I knew that this could really be something that I could create a lifestyle off of! So I’ve worked very hard and I’ve done over 75 shows to date and I really love it.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Oh man ! When you have your own business and are thriving in that area, you’re working so hard to continue to develop it and then you meet somebody and you fall in love and it doesn’t work out : THAT is when you will truly see how strong you are! You have to have such resilience to continue to build the empire that you were building before you met that person! So I’ve had a few moments where I’ve really had to snap out of whatever I was going through in my personal life and really put the pedal to the metal with my business! It always pays off.

Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
There are too many instances to have one specific story! I do a lot of pop-ups at events as a vendor and so you’re meeting a lot of different people in one night! And obviously you wanna make a sale, but you want them to be very happy about the piece that they purchase! So there are moments where you have to try the piece on them and you have to explain the essence of that piece and what you want it to make them feel or where they can wear this piece! So being that my pieces are so unique, sometimes I have to give a rundown of the true idea of what I’m creating. The idea is to make a statement and enhance the energy of the wearer.
