We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jenifer Guinn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jenifer below.
Jenifer , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
If I went back in time, I wouldn’t necessarily start later or sooner, but perhaps more well-versed and informed on running an actual business in detail. I started Vidaluxlook back in 2015 as a service provider, slowly pivoting into manufacturing a product. I had just birthed my only son three years prior, and I was not mentally available (suffering from PTSD) to dive deep into my business. As a Master’s Degree in Social Psychology recipient, I had no in-depth clue of what a business’s sustainability and lifecycle, including daily functioning, actually takes from that aspect. So perhaps I would have gotten a Business degree instead, or at least my Master’s at some point in the field. Also I would not have just started as a hobby without a solid plan mapped out.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I really and truly started this off as a hobby just making bottles as gifts for my family over the holidays a while back when I had my son. Honestly, I didn’t plan anything! My son loves to eat just like his father and I, so I began cooking almost two to three times a day. In addition, Post baby I was diagnosed with ADHD, Social Anxiety Disorder, Depression and also Scoliosis. That was a lot of medication that psychologically I was not willing to take, on top of the addictive pain pills I was prescribed by my doctor for pain. I knew I was way too young to take and administer that many pills at once, at that point, I refused the mental health medicine and started to research and study food as medicine. The inspiration mainly comes from the idea of having different options for various range of cultures, not just the Americas. My palate really enjoys the international cuisine taste and also spicy foods, thereofore each of our eleven flavors are represenation of a flower and or a special herb not necessarilty from the US. For expample, Soursop leaves are from Puerto Rico, and not sold directly in the Americas however I have them in my Basil Chive Olive oil and it has many health benefits such as boosting the immune system.

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
Vidaluxlook is 100% self funded at the moment. We have received donations and silent investments here and there. We are in the process now of securing an Angel Investor and also locking in secured capital for it as well.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My business initially suffered due to my lack of knowledge on how much grit and commitment it takes to plant, build, and grow. I have finally learned by experience that no matter what life throws at you. The show must go on, and you have to be the person you can depend on, not anyone else, and you have to set your emotions and feelings aside to tackle all obstacles and tasks on your plate daily. Without God, I would not have been in business this long, let alone learned as much as I have thus far in which I am truly grateful.
