We recently connected with Shatoria Peavy and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shatoria , thanks for joining us today. What’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
I hear A lot of talk from people asking why must you help the same person over and over. Is it a limit? How do you know if the person will do the right thing with funds or resources.
Honestly I disagree with their thinking!
Times are hard and sometimes people Can’t catch a break. See my answer is we’re not responsible for what people do or the outcome. All I can do is.. simply do! We all Are held accountable for our actions so if someone is taking advantage of what we give then that’s up to that person and God.
I will help as long as someone needs it!
We serve and we want moms to know that we can be counted on.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Shatoria Peavy the founder and executive director of Mommy’s Lounge Inspires. MLI is a 501 c3 Nonprofit organization located in Birmingham, AL that serves the single mother community. We provide financial support for mothers who are experiencing hardship along with emotional Support.
I was born In Birmingham, AL and raised in the West End community.(West side the best side) I am a mom of three beautiful girls, Author and a Servant for God’s people at heart.
As a young mother at the age of 20 life began to get real. I was figuring out life. Raising a child without her father was very Challenging. I went through a lot of ups and downs but still found courage to pull through.
Fast forward years later I got married but was divorced 3 years later due to an unhealthy marriage. To my surprise I’m back a single mom. I felt alone( I had family and friends but it’s only so much they can do), I was ashamed, I was scared most importantly I felt like I failed my kids because they didn’t have their dads.
You’ll have to get the book when I’m done to know more in detail lol.
Seriously tho, years later I have another child (which all my kids were made with love) I realize that throughout the single mother hood God provided for me and my children. He literally strengthen me and allowed me to become wiser, you know helping me to make better decisions.
There were times I shopped at thrift stores, times it was hard to eat (well for me because I would give my kids my last before they go without), it was just hard period. Trying to figure out how you gone pay this or that robbing Peter to pay Paul.
I was even homeless with me 2 children.
God provided. He sent strangers to help me, LITERALLY!
That stuck with me! Now, my passion and purpose is Single moms. I go above and beyond to make sure that moms and their kids have clothing, shoes. Toiletries, food, pampers and most importantly emotional support.
MlI Consist-of providing the necessities And support to mothers with our mom support group so that single moms what have to feel how I felt or go through what I’ve went through.
I’m proud that God chose me! When I went through those things I faced years ago it was so hard. I didn’t feel worthy of helping No one! Not a soul! But God saw fit to use little of me to help change the world one single mom at a time.
My love and passion for single moms goes a little deeper. Becoming an Author was inspired by MLI. My book:Mommys Lounge inspires presents- 21 days of insight and journaling was written with women and single mothers in mind. This book is filled with encouraging scriptures, inspiration and insight on relatable topics we all may have faced while providing hope to the reader. Available at Walmart.com
This movement is PERSONAL AND DEAR TO MY HEART. Most Single moms are hurting, facing deep-hard challenges and this organization provides a sense of RELIEF.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
What helped me build my reputation within the market would be me being transparent and consistent. I always share my adversities because that is what created MLI. I went through all of those things to be able to relate and show Unmeasurable compassion. I genuinely care. The love that I have within has gotten me thus far and has shown nothing but that to my peers, the single moms I serve and the community.
Although, I’m almost 4 years in the game serving the community I still face challenges BUT I push through and continue to serve and give my ALL because I know that this is not for me but for God’s people.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Wow!! This is a great question. Leadership role is not for the weak lol I can say that for me it showed me the areas that I need to work on. It showed me that in order to be an effective leader of your team you must listen, delegate, and learn to take emotions out of it so that you can think/move clearly and correctly.
Honestly, you just gotta be yourself and respect people but most importantly you have to be firm and mean what you say and say what you mean. Otherwise people will run over you.. you know.
You have to understand that as a business owner and leader you do have a image to uphold. There will be things you have to sacrifice as especially as God Broaden your territory. As your business grows you must grow too!
