We were lucky to catch up with Jo-Vonia Ayers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jo-Vonia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I began Loc Beads and Things as a creative way to express myself Through Unique Fashion trendsetting, I am an artist naturally and, I love to find ways to step outside the box while trying new things. I started growing my hair Locs over 8 years ago and, I have been on a spiritual journey ever since. My hair inspired me to create one of a kind adornments. I started with creating myself something unique and, that evolved into creating Art for friends and, family. I now do several events a year to showcase all of my One of a Kind Body Adornments. I absolutely Love what I do.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I go by Jo and I started my business Loc Beads and Things 5 years ago. I started this business by creating for myself unique adornments to stand out amongst the crowd. My adornments were then noticed by friends and,family and, they requested custom Adornments for themselves. I then created a small business to create Custom Wearable Art for anyone who would like it. I pride myself/business on Love, Pure intentions and, Uniqueness. I listen attentively to the clients who trust me to create one of a kind adornments they can be proud of. What brings me the most gratification as a business owner is seeing the reactions of the individuals who purchase my items. The joy they feel brings me inner joy and, fuels me to continue with my business journey. I am proud of my accomplishments from being in several magazine articles online and, in my community. I am also proud of the impact I have made with my peers and, community over the years. I know I am making a difference with my Brand and that is the biggest reward. I pray that whom ever reads this article feels compelled to step out and, try something different today. Even if that means getting you something Unique from Loc Beads and, Things as a start.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
A story of my resilience happened in 2025. I was hospitalized for 18 days and, went to rehabilitation for three days, 48 hours after one of my biggest business events. I was assaulted by someone unrelated to the event. I was in the Intensive Care Unit and, then released to go home some time after. I did rehabilitation at home for an additional two months to learn to walk with stability again. I endured so many health issues in 2025 that I was really discouraged from continuing the in person events Id normally do each month for my business. I was encouraged by family and, friends to continue with my business even after such a trying time in life. I learned so much about being strong , resilient and, humble while going through this. I am grateful that I am able to keep going and to pass encouragement to others. Remember to NEVER give up.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What helped me to build my name Loc Beads and Things in my Community is consistency I continue to make sure my business name stays relevant and, in circulation throughout the year. I’ve built relationships with other influential individuals in my community that have also helped shape my trajectory. I pray to expand into different markets in 2026 and, to build on what I have to create more opportunities for the youth. I am Honest, Genuine and, God Fearing, These are all qualities that have helped me maintain my reputation in my Market.
