We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ana Zaja Petrak a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ana, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
Through their love for the professions they devoted themselves to (as a writer and a film director) they passed on to me a passion for art and taught me how important it is to do what you truly love in life. They have always supported my choices and given me the space to make mistakes from time to time, which is just as important.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a graphic designer and illustrator based in Zagreb, Croatia. After completing a degree in visual communications, I spent several years working as a graphic designer. Eventually, I decided to return to what I’ve always loved most: drawing. That’s when my illustration career began.
My style is colourful, simple, and graphic. I try to use as few elements as possible, making sure each one is clear and strong – a sensibility I developed during my design years. I adore colours and notice them everywhere. Combining them has always excited me, and I’m quite bold in using strong, open colours in my work.
Much of my work is inspired by food. I’ve illustrated cookbooks and packaging, merging my love for food and art into what I do professionally. I’m fascinated by the energy and emotional connection that food brings to people. I’m also inspired by Mediterranean slow living, nature, and simple, everyday moments.
I also work in mixed media, creating pieces for galleries and collectors around the world.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Life as a small creative business owner is amazing, but it’s not always easy. There have been quiet periods when projects slowed down, but instead of stressing, I used that time to experiment, try new ideas, and focus on personal work. Those moments taught me patience, persistence, and trust in my own creative voice. They made me stronger and more confident in what I do.
Resilience in this field isn’t just about working harder, it’s about staying curious, adaptable, and true to yourself, even when things feel uncertain.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding part of being an artist is the freedom to experience things differently and translate them into my work, while bringing joy to others. There’s something magical about turning a thought, a feeling, or a small observation into a visual piece that can make someone pause or smile. I love being able to explore, experiment, and keep learning – every project feels like a little adventure. It’s that sense of freedom, curiosity, and self-expression that keeps me excited about what I do.
