We recently connected with Brad Weinstein and have shared our conversation below.
Brad, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear from you about what you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry and why it matters.
Large companies have tried to franchise or try to open shops around the US. They have to follow a guide just like if you were a large chain of restaurants. This in my opinion will not work and has not worked. Each flower shop is somewhat different. We all sell flowers and emotions. Not one day is always the same. Each client and occasion is unique.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My father, Lew Weinstein, was looking to start a business. After research in June 1972,Petals & Stems was born in Dallas, Texas. He did not know anything about the flower business other than what a rose was. He started to go out and meet with caterers, hotels and anyone who would listen and tell them about Petals & Stems and how we would be honored to work with them.
Petals & Stems is a retail florist that maintains all aspects of a florist. Want us to deliver flowers, gifts, plants local or around the globe? Would you like to come in the shop and pick up a single flower or a large bouquet? Do you have a wedding, party or funeral that you need floral for? Do you want weekly flowers in your office or home? Do you want 1, 20 or 100 gift baskets in the next few days? Would you like 1, 20 or 100 balloons in a bouquet? Teddy Bear? Chocolates? You want something to go with your flowers? We can go and get it. Want a floral design class for friends or a party? If you want something we can do our best to make that happen.
In 1997, Brad Weinstein, Lew’s son joined the business. My father taught me the client, product, employee and how vendors are like your family. How to listen to them and always make it right no matter what.
We are proud of each and every client. Whether you are going to buy 1 flower or 100 flowers, our clients feel that they are a part of the P&S Family.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Being in business since 1972 has been our best source of new clients. Our past clients share with their friends and family, People who send flowers often or any type of gifts are generous. My clients shaped me to be generous. If my son’s teacher did something over and beyond, my first instinct is how can I thank them in such a way. That being said, when you see your father or mother doing that you tend to follow and they happen to always share who their go to florist is.
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
I have had lot’s of those great stories. I believe that instead of the fear or rejection, think of it as a possible opportunity and just because they said no today ask to be their number 2.
We had a corporate client that decided to start ordering flowers from another company. Every year after that I would reach out to see if they were happy with the current provider. Always in a soft sale way. After year 5 they came back and that has been over 4 years since then. Each time they place an order it is a reminder not to give up. I have a few other clients above my desk with a list showing each time we reached out and sent a little flower and told them just to consider Petals & Stems. They are current customers today.
