We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Todd Mosby. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Todd below.
Todd, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My most recent album project is titled American Heartland is musical travelogue that tone-paints the geography and spirit of America. It’s a sonic tribute to my home state Missouri, which I feel is the heart and soul of the heartland of America.
Serving as the second chapter in my ongoing travelogue series, American Heartland reflects a lifetime of artistic exploration and deep regional roots. The album features lush orchestration, evocative female vocals, dynamic horn arrangements, stately string passages, and minimalist, image-driven lyrics designed to create vivid landscapes.
“I like to use words to convey images,” Mosby explains. “This album is about translating the feeling of Missouri – the fields, the skies, the storms, the quiet moments – into music.”
An award-winning musician and Imrat guitar inventor, I am known for synthesizing Western and North Indian classical traditions with Jazz and Americana influences. His distinctive style draws comparisons to artists such as Steely Dan, Wes Montgomery, James Taylor, and Joni Mitchell, balancing sophisticated musicianship with broad accessibility.
American Heartland features an exceptional roster of world-class musicians, including Vinnie Colaiuta, Tom Scott, Leland Sklar, Luis Conte, Michael Manring, Dapo Torimiro, Nick Lane, Lola Kristine, Laura Vall, Dan Fornero, Judy Kang, John Dickson, and Bruce Carver. The album was produced by two-time Grammy winner Jeffrey Weber and was recorded at the legendary Village Studios, and mastered at Grundman Studios.
Throughout my career, I have released seven albums, earned multiple industry awards, and received praise from musical luminaries including Ustad Imrat Khan, Mike Stern, and Gary Burton. With American Heartland, I feel i have delivered one of my most personal and expansive statements to date.
The album’s standout tracks include the shimmering bossa nova “All the Stars Tonight,” the two-part “Witchi Tai,” the impressionistic “Clouds Above Golden Fields,” and the title track “American Heartland,” which layers contemporary jazz with rustic Midwestern warmth.
Not many people know the rich and diverse musical heritage of Missouri. Bluegrass flows from the Ozark Mountains. Blues drifts in along the Mississippi River. Rock ‘n’ roll is part of the state’s DNA—after all, Missouri is the birthplace of Chuck Berry, the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Jazz legends like Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Charlie Hayden and Pat Metheny are native sons. The “Show-Me State” has a lot to say for its musical legacy.
Todd, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Todd Mosby is an award-winning composer, guitarist, and inventor based in St. Louis, Missouri.
Mosby is known for his genre-defying musical language, where he layers jazz, folk, New Age, blues, rock, bossa nova, and North Indian classical music into richly textured soundscapes that reflect both depth and technical mastery.
He studied at Berklee College of Music and Webster University and spent thirteen years studying classical North Indian music with Ustad Imrat Khan. Mosby is the only guitarist inducted into the prestigious Imdadkhani Gharana, one of India’s oldest and most respected musical lineages. He also played a key role in designing the Imrat guitar, an 18-string hybrid instrument bridging Eastern and Western traditions.
Over the course of his career, Mosby has released seven albums and collaborated with many of the world’s most respected studio musicians. His work has earned multiple industry awards and critical acclaim, and he is recognized for creating music that is both intellectually engaging and resonant.
With American Heartland, Mosby continues his musical travelogue series, translating place, memory, and culture into cinematic musical experiences that connect deeply with listeners around the world.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I would say I have an unending passion which drives new and exciting discoveries and revelations each time I go to compose, arrange, practice and perform. To achieve any level of high artistic development requires putting thousands of hours into honing your craft and a lifetime commitment.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I feel if doctors, lawyers, universities, insurance companies, engineers, etc. began offering their services for free, it would be a great service to humanity and level the playing field a bit for 95% of the working musicians. Ever since music has become basically free, it has severely limited general public access to mostly music which is commercially available. Only those few corporate musicians with the financial backing to market their music to the masses become the stalwarts of what the masses see. Example there are over 100 categories in the Grammys yet only the top 10 categories are what most public awareness is directed towards.
The popular arena musicians become the go to for what music represents in a society thereby reflecting trend and determining tase. Go to any gas station to pump gas or grocery store and there they are. Because these streaming platforms are owned by the corporates, this leaves the majority of independents pretty much out of the loop at that level of competition. If marketing is what determines cultural trend and taste, then it is not quite representative of what is really reflective of societal appeal and development. Instead, it becomes based on promotional access which results in limited market choices.
Musicians have always led the way in technological development, innovation and societal change and I envision a future where most services which benefit humanity will be free of financial limitation.
