We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Wendy Sellers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Wendy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
For most of my career, I had great bosses. Leaders who trusted me. Leaders who valued people. Leaders who understood that HR isn’t about paperwork — it’s about people. Then our company was acquired.
Almost overnight, everything changed. My new, direct supervisor oversaw HR and unfortunately, he was one of the most toxic leaders I had ever experienced. The culture shifted. Fear replaced trust. Confusion replaced clarity. Good employees — high performers — began to leave. I was one of them. That experience was pivotal.
I had helped our organization (plus the ones we merged with or acquired) build strong, compliant, people-centered workplaces. Suddenly, I was watching firsthand what happens when leadership fails. Since then, I help companies navigate culture shifts, downsizing, change management, and of course – leadership development up and down the org chart.
I realized something very clearly: companies don’t usually fail because of bad strategy — they fail because of poor leadership and mismanaged people issues. I also realized that too many organizations either: do not invest in proper HR guidance, or rely on HR departments that are overly bureaucratic, disconnected, or afraid to tell leadership the truth
I knew there was a better way. I didn’t set out to “start a business” in the traditional sense. I set out to fix a problem I had lived through: toxic leadership, poor management training, and HR departments that either overcomplicate things or avoid the hard conversations.
What excited me most was the opportunity to help companies do it right — to create workplaces where managers are trained properly, compliance isn’t an afterthought, and employees are treated as the assets that they truly are.
The logic was simple: Companies will always need HR expertise. Managers will always need effective training. Compliance will always matter. Leaders will always need someone who tells them the truth, even when difficult to hear. So I became that person. That’s how my consulting career was born.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Wendy Sellers is The HR Lady® — and her expertise comes from real-world experience, not theory alone.
I didn’t enter HR with a perfectly mapped-out career plan. In fact, I stumbled into the field and had to navigate its challenges firsthand. That journey shaped me into the authentic, transparent, results-oriented professional that I am today. I understand what it’s like to learn the hard way — and I am committed to making sure my clients don’t have to.
With nearly 30 years of experience, I have worked across a wide spectrum of HR functions, including: HR operations; downsizing and restructuring; change management; corporate culture development; coaching, mentoring and training; leadership development; recruiting; and compliance.
Since 2010, I have been teaching in-person, online, and onstage — helping organizations build stronger leaders and healthier workplaces. I train administrators on HR compliance — because getting the law wrong is expensive. I then train managers on everything else — because managing people is a skill, and most managers are never formally taught how to do it well.
My formal education includes:
Master’s in Human Resources
Master’s in Health Care Administration
Have held numerous professional certifications, including: SPHR (HRCI) and SHRM-SCP (and she has taught the SHRM course); Certified Internal Investigation Administrator; DiSC Certified Personality Style Trainer; Health and Life Insurance License; and Dale Carnegie Leadership & Empathy Graduate (to name a few). I have also been an active volunteer and past board member for multiple nonprofits.
I am most proud of is helping organizations move from reactive to proactive — from chaos to clarity — and watching managers grow into confident, competent leaders who positively impact their teams. What I want potential clients to know is simple:
HR does not have to be scary.
Leadership does not have to be rigid.
Compliance does not have to be confusing.
But ignoring them will absolutely cost you.
What sets me apart is not just my credentials — it’s my approach. I provide practical solutions. No hidden agendas. No corporate fluff. No unnecessary complexity.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Three things: I am real. I am reliable. And I am respectful.
Wendy’s straightforward style means she doesn’t sugar-coat difficult conversations. Business owners and executives don’t hire her for comfort — they hire her for clarity.
She believes people are a company’s greatest asset, and they should be treated as such. That means training and empowering managers, supervisors, and employees isn’t optional — it’s mandatory.
She holds leaders accountable.
She teaches managers how to manage.
She ensures compliance is done correctly.
And she gets things done.
Clients know that when they work with The HR Lady®, they’re getting someone who will tell them what they need to hear — not just what they want to hear — and then help them implement real, practical solutions.
That consistency, honesty, and results-driven mindset are what built her reputation — and what continue to sustain it.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Don’t be a jerk! I wrote a book about that (two actually). Create company values. Hire for them. And fire for violations of them – no matter where the person sits on the org chart.
