We recently connected with Starasia Abraham and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Starasia, thanks for joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Defining success has always been personal to me. In my opinion, it truly depends on what stage you are in and where you’re trying to go. For example, When you are just starting out with anything that you do it could be considered a success to get your first customer success comes in stages but I guess simply put it is whenever you make a goal you are considered successful in my opinion.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Sure! My name is star, I’m a chemical engineer turned esthetician and cosmetic chemist, I got into cosmetic chemistry working for one of the largest beauty conglomerates in the world. I started working as a beauty educator and asked my supervisors at the time to ask what would be required to get into the filed I was really interested in and it kind of just took off for me after that. I learned so much for my jobs in the beauty industry that it lead me to want to open my own full service lab. For a while I was just interested in getting the bigger contracts which works pretty well however, I started to notice that smaller brands were getting left behind and they wanted a more personal approach so I decided to build a nice team and focus more on smaller indie brands like myself, since it’s harder for us to break in the industry. Primarily black owned brands. I’ve been doing this since before Jackie aina started pointing out the lack of representation in the industry and so on and so fourth. Now it’s cool to be a black owned and POC owned indie brand – there’s still not to much funds and there’s still a lot of obstacles in place but I mean, at least it’s cool, right? Wrong, and that’s why It was important for me to open a lab to help smaller black owned brands truly emerge in this industry.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I built my reputation making myself known in my community, this was really at the height of social media but for some reason I wasn’t really interested in social I wanted to meet with actual people I knew were interested in expanding their business, I took a lot of free calls and did a lot of dinners with prospects that didn’t follow up and some who are still my customers to this day. It’s been a crazy journey in growth.
Can you talk to us about your experience with buying businesses?
Yes, I’ve bought a few brands to have underneath my portfolio as a means to grow. Whew what was it like? Hmm, it took a lot of time and money but it was worth it. I hope I don’t sound too vague but certain things I try to keep personal I guess you can say.
