Mallorie , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Consistency is key! Staying motivated and productive even in the hardest moments is so important. Starting your own buisness can be very intimidating and difficult at first so staying consistent and finding a good balance for everything that needs to be done is an absolute must to be successful. We have been experiencing so much right now in this world, believing in yourself, your business, and just truly never giving up is crucial to your success. There will be so many ups and downs but as long as you stick with it there will be so much reward to come.
Mallorie , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a self taught baker. I specialize in custom cakes as well as custom cookies and other desserts. It started with me just making cakes for my kids, family and friends. Eventually receiving so much amazing feedback they encouraged me to start this as a business and that’s exactly what I did. I decided about 7 years ago to truly give this my all and dive straight into things which was scary, but I’m so thankful for taking that leap of faith. I have had the privilege of meeting and learning from so many amazing cake artists in this industry and for that I’m incredibly thankful. Whenever I receive a inquiry for a cake or dessert I work very closely with my client to make sure I get all the details needed to make their request exactly how they would like and truly ensure 100% satisfaction from the client. Right now due to inflation on all prices, I can’t say thank you enough to my customers for understanding and still keeping my buisness flowing. It truly means the world to me. I have to say I’m most proud of the fact I just never gave up. There has been so many ups and downs especially through out the pandemic. I stayed strong, kept my faith in myself and my buisness, and just never gave up. I would like all my future clients and followers to know that Marvelous Mal’s will always give 110% to ensure you are completely satisfied and happy with your order. This is my passion and what I absolutely love to do.
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
I was given the opportunity to present my desserts at a festival market. From what I heard people made a good amount of money so I was excited but nervous putting myself out there. I honestly had no idea how many sweets to make I wasn’t sure how big the crowd would be. I for sure wanted to be prepared so I made DIY cookie kits, lots of cupcakes, as well as a pretty good amount of mini cupcakes. The market was going to be 4 hours long. It opened and people started coming in they would stop by and talk ask questions but no sales just yet. One hour passed then another hour passed and nothing. I started to get so discouraged and bummed out. I had made all this stuff that had cost me a good amount and alot of my time making it all. I took a deep breath and just smiled and continued to call people over to my booth. One lady came with her daughter and we got to talking and she ended up buying a little over half of everything I had on the table! I was so blown away and very grateful. I kept telling her thank you, thank you so much she got my buisness card and walked off I felt so good my confidence was back up and i was just pumped after that .I noticed so many people looking at her as she walked away with so many boxes from my booth and believe it or not once people saw her making that large purchase it was like they had to have what she got. I sold out of everything the last hour and till this day that lady places orders with me all the time. I gained a loyal customer who recommends me to so many people which im always so grateful. Never be afraid to do something because you have never done it before. Take that leap of faith. Stay positive even when the odds seem against you! Blessings come when you don’t give up.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Every time I send off a order I send it with a buisness card as well as telling the customer to please tag me in any photos they might share on social media. Social media is a free way to advertise your buisness. Finding time to post and learning when to post makes such a huge difference. Most of my clients always tell me they were either referred by someone or found my page on IG. Believe me creating content for your social media is extremely time consuming and can be alot at times but it’s super important to fit it into your schedule and just find a balance that works for you. It has helped me so much when it comes to getting new clients and staying in touch with old ones.
