We recently connected with Jah Mitchell and have shared our conversation below.
Jah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Yes, I have been able to earn a full-time living from my creative work, and it has been one of the most meaningful journeys of my life.
When I first started photography, it wasn’t with the intention of building a full-time business. It began as a creative outlet and something that brought me peace and fulfillment. I was especially drawn to newborn photography because of how meaningful and emotional those early days are for families. I started slowly, investing in education, practicing consistently, and focusing on improving both my technical skills and my ability to connect with my clients.
In the early stages, growth was gradual. Every session helped me build confidence, refine my style, and strengthen my portfolio. One of the biggest turning points was deciding to fully commit—not just creatively, but professionally. I invested in creating a dedicated studio space in Houston, which allowed me to provide a more consistent, elevated experience for my clients. Having a studio also helped define my brand and establish trust with families who were looking for timeless, high-quality portraiture.
Word of mouth played a huge role in my growth. Many of my clients returned for multiple milestones—maternity, newborn, sitter, and family sessions—and referred their friends and family. That kind of trust is incredibly meaningful and helped create a strong foundation for my business. Over time, photography became not just something I loved, but a sustainable and reliable full-time career.
Looking back, one thing that helped most was staying consistent and patient. Building a creative business takes time, and there were seasons that were slower or uncertain. But I continued to invest in my work, my client experience, and my long-term vision.
If I could do anything differently, I would have trusted myself sooner and invested earlier in building my brand and studio. Creating a clear identity and professional environment accelerated my growth and allowed me to attract the kind of clients who truly value this type of portraiture.
Today, I feel incredibly grateful to do work that is both creative and meaningful. Being trusted to document such important moments in families’ lives is something I never take for granted, and it continues to inspire me every day.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a Houston-based newborn and maternity photographer and the owner of Jah Mitchell Photography. I specialize in timeless studio portraiture that captures meaningful milestones for families, including maternity, newborn, and baby’s first year.
My journey into photography began as a creative outlet and quickly grew into a full-time career as I refined my skills and developed my own style. I built a dedicated studio in Houston designed to provide a calm, comfortable experience for families and a consistent environment for creating high-quality portraits.
What sets my work apart is my focus on simplicity, emotion, and timelessness. My goal is to create portraits that feel elegant and natural, so they remain meaningful for decades. Many of my clients return for multiple milestones and refer their friends and family, which has allowed my business to grow organically.
I’m most proud of building a sustainable business rooted in trust and long-term relationships. Being able to preserve such important moments for families is incredibly meaningful, and it continues to inspire my work every day.

Have you ever had to pivot?
One of the biggest pivots in my journey was deciding to fully commit to photography and build my own studio. What began as a creative outlet gradually became something more meaningful, and I realized I wanted to turn it into a sustainable full-time career. Making that transition required not only investing in equipment and a dedicated studio space, but also believing in my ability to build something long-term.
There were moments of uncertainty, especially during slower seasons, but those experiences taught me the importance of consistency, patience, and continuing to invest in my craft and client experience. Creating a professional studio environment allowed me to offer a higher level of service and helped establish trust with families who were looking for timeless newborn and maternity portraits.
This pivot ultimately shaped the foundation of my business today. It allowed me to grow from simply taking photos to building a brand and a space where families can return to document multiple milestones. Looking back, that decision to fully commit was one of the most important turning points in both my career and personal growth.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe consistency, client experience, and trust have been the most important factors in building my reputation. From the beginning, I focused not only on creating beautiful images, but also on providing a calm, professional, and comfortable experience for families, especially during newborn sessions.
Specializing in newborn and maternity photography also helped define my brand and allowed me to develop a recognizable, timeless style. Having a dedicated studio environment further strengthened trust with clients and allowed me to deliver consistent, high-quality results.
Word of mouth has played a significant role in my growth. Many of my clients return for multiple milestones and refer their friends and family, which has helped build long-term relationships and a strong foundation within my community.
Over time, maintaining professionalism, consistency, and genuine care for my clients has helped establish my reputation and allowed my business to grow organically.
