Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Micaela. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Micaela, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
The most meaningful risk I’ve taken began when I decided to turn photography from a passion into a business while building a new life in the United States. I am a Latina immigrant, a wife, a mother of three with another baby on the way, and a photographer. When I met my husband and settled here, I was starting from zero—new country, new language, and no professional network. The safe choice would have been to look for a predictable job, but I felt a strong pull to create something of my own.
At that time, our family was living in an RV, focused on saving and finding stability. I told my husband I wanted to invest in a professional camera and begin offering photo sessions. It was a real financial and emotional risk: I had no clients, no portfolio, and no guarantee that anyone would trust an immigrant woman still learning English to capture their most important moments. But I believed that photography could become more than a hobby—it could be a business that supported our future.
I started small, offering sessions to local families, learning marketing, client communication, and editing mostly at night after my children were asleep. Every step required courage: setting prices, promoting myself, speaking with clients in a second language, and balancing motherhood with entrepreneurship. Slowly, my calendar began to fill and my work started to speak for itself.
Today that risk has grown into a professional brand that serves families in my community and contributes significantly to our household income. Beyond the financial result, it taught me how to build trust, manage a business, and lead with empathy and discipline. Taking that step showed me that entrepreneurship is not about the absence of fear, but about moving forward with purpose. My story is still growing, but that decision in our small RV became the foundation of the business—and the life—I am building today.

Micaela, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I didn’t grow up planning to be an entrepreneur, but life led me to photography at the exact moment I needed a new beginning. I discovered this craft after meeting my husband and starting our life together here. What began as a way to document our own memories slowly turned into a passion for telling other families’ stories. I realized that a photograph is more than an image—it’s proof that a moment, a love, a season of life existed.
I specialize in family, maternity, and portrait photography, creating sessions that feel natural, emotional, and true to each client. My work is centered on everyday beauty: the way a mother holds her child, the laughter between partners, the anticipation before a new baby arrives. I guide my clients from the first message to the final gallery, helping them feel comfortable in front of the camera even if they’ve never had professional photos before. The problem I solve is simple but meaningful—I help people who feel “not photogenic” see themselves the way their loved ones see them.
What sets me apart is the combination of empathy and professionalism shaped by my own journey. As an immigrant and a mom of three with another baby on the way, I understand real life: busy schedules, tight budgets, and the desire to freeze fleeting moments before children grow. My clients don’t just book a session; they receive an experience where they feel seen, respected, and safe to be themselves. I communicate in both Spanish and English, which allows me to serve a diverse community that often feels overlooked in the photography world.
I’m most proud that my business was built from zero—no connections, no formal background—only determination and love for this art. Today my brand represents authenticity over perfection. I want potential clients to know that they don’t need to look like models or have a perfect life to deserve beautiful photographs. My goal is to create images that their children will hold years from now and say, “This was us. This was love.”
At the heart of my work is connection: between cultures, between generations, and between the person someone is today and the memories they want to leave behind. That is the story I try to tell with every session and every frame.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
The initial funding for my photography business came from my greatest supporter—my husband. He was my first investor, my biggest fan, and the person who encouraged me to see my talent as a real business rather than just a hobby. Investing in a professional camera and equipment felt like a significant risk, but he believed in the vision before there was any proof it would succeed.
We chose to start small and grow intentionally. I used personal savings to purchase the essentials and reinvested every dollar I earned from early sessions back into the business for education, better tools, and marketing. My husband’s support went far beyond finances—every time I work, he takes care of our children and becomes my personal driver, helping me get to sessions, carry equipment, and stay focused on my clients.
That combination of practical investment and everyday partnership became the true foundation of my brand. My story shows that meaningful businesses often begin not with large capital, but with teamwork, sacrifice, and someone who believes in your potential as much as you do.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A story that truly reflects my resilience happened during one of the busiest seasons of my photography career. I was fully booked with back-to-back sessions, and the Texas heat was unforgiving. The night before an important family shoot, my childcare plans fell through and I considered canceling. Part of me felt overwhelmed and wondered if I was asking too much of myself by trying to be a present mom and a committed business owner at the same time.
Instead of giving up, I decided to adapt. I brought activities for my kids, reorganized my schedule, and turned the session into a team effort. That day I photographed a beautiful gallery while managing real-life chaos behind the scenes. The client never noticed the challenges—I delivered on time, and the images became some of my favorites.
That experience reminded me that resilience isn’t about having perfect conditions; it’s about showing up even when things are messy. As an entrepreneur and mother, I’ve learned to problem-solve in real time, to stay calm under pressure, and to keep my commitment to my clients without losing sight of my family. Every obstacle since then has felt a little smaller because I know I’m capable of creating solutions, not excuses.
