We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Fly Ty. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Fly below.
Fly, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One deeply underappreciated facet of being a service provider is the kind of crazy stuff that happens from time to time. It could be anything from a disgruntled client attacking an employee or waking up to find out a celebrity gave you a shoutout on TikTok – the sudden, unexpected hits (both positive and negative) make the profession both exhilarating and exhausting. Can you share one of your craziest stories?
The wildest, most positive experience of my life happened at a horror convention where I was dressed in a screen-accurate Freddy Krueger cosplay. Coincidentally, the actual actor who played Freddy was in the same building, with a long line of fans waiting to meet him and take photos.
The positive aspect of that moment was truly unbelievable: Some people literally abandoned his official line to instead queue up for pictures with me. They were so convinced by my costume, they even started paying me for the photos, all right there in the same venue as the genuine celebrity.
I was completely shocked and couldn’t believe the crowd’s reaction as they navigated towards my makeshift “line” as if I were the real star. The ultimate compliment came when I overheard one person remark that I looked more like Freddy Krueger than the actor did himself. It was an unforgettable moment of unexpected recognition and a massive ego boost!

Fly, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m based in Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY, I am a multi-disciplinary fashion stylist and award-winning horror cosplayer. My career spans various facets of the industry, from runway production and conceptual design to high-fashion styling. With multiple first-place titles in major cosplay competitions and features in prominent fashion and cosplay publications, I bring a unique, editorial edge to every project.
My journey began with a childhood fascination for the cultural power of hip-hop fashion. Observing how trends were born inspired me to move from a fan to a creator, eventually becoming a sartorial influence in my own right. What started as handcrafted custom pieces for personal use quickly evolved into a bespoke design business as demand for my aesthetic grew. As my career progressed, I transitioned into professional styling, leading to collaborations with celebrity clientele and behind-the-scenes roles at New York Fashion Week.
Ultimately, my mission is to instill confidence in my clients through creative storytelling. Whether I am curating a red-carpet look or managing high-pressure needs at NYFW, I leverage my deep industry experience and referral-based network to ensure every client feels empowered by their aesthetic choice.”

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
“My reputation within the horror cosplay and fashion industries grew through genuine friendships with fellow cosplayers. By collaborating on projects, providing cosplay referrals to help others refine their looks, and actively engaging with my supportive fanbase, I’ve been able to solidify my place in the community.”

How did you build your audience on social media?
“The way I built my audience on social media platforms is by publishing high-quality, engaging content that I know the fans will love, rather than focusing solely on what satisfies my personal preferences. I’d say if you’d like to build your audience as an emerging designer, stylist, or cosplayer, you must first and foremost show support to people you know, and not be afraid to engage and share their content in order for recognition to come to your work. Additionally, be very consistent and engaging with fans of your work.”
