We were lucky to catch up with David Spitdowski Jr recently and have shared our conversation below.
David, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I grew up competing in gymnastics since the age of 5, so I was always around coaches. I would go to gymnastics camp every summer to work with some of the best coaches from all over the world. I looked up to these coaches and always wanted to help others achieve their goals. As I got into high school, I was going to the gym to get extra strength and conditioning in for gymnastics. This is where my passion for fitness began. On my 18th birthday, I asked my family for a personal trainer and nutrition certification. I’ve been hooked ever since with continuing education so that I can provide the best quality coaching for my clients.
David, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been coaching in the fitness industry for 15 years. In 2010, I moved to Atlanta to take a job as the Off Ice Director and Strength coach for the Ice Forum (Atlanta Thrashers Facility). During that time I began building up clientele for my personal training in addition to working with the athletes. August 2011, I decided to take the leap and start Spitz Fitness. For the first 8 years, Spitz Fitness was a concierge personal training service where I would go to condos, homes, and facilities to train clients all over Atlanta. Expanding into online coaching a few years into it as clients started to move away but still wanted to work with me.
May 2019, I built Spitz Fitness HQ. A private personal training facility located in the Buckhead/Lindbergh area. I moved all my clients into the facility and it has continued to grow every year. We now offer semi private (2-4 clients), 1 on 1, nutrition consulting, online training and nutrition coaching through our app, and clinics in house plus at other gyms. We built the app so that we could reach clients from all over the world.
Our clientele ranges from people who have never stepped into a gym before and have no idea where to start to people who have been in the gym for most of their life but want to take it to the next level. We also have a powerlifting team who had multiple national champions at the 2022 USPA National Championships.
We focus on the nutrition as the basis for our programs. Making sure the clients know what they need to be eating to fuel their bodies for their lifestyle. Everyone is different so we take the time to build out a individualized program for each client who works with us.
I’m most proud of the quality of coaching that we offer both in person and online. A client is not just a number to us, we work with the client every step of the way for them to achieve their goals. When our clients get a win, we win. Seeing how many lives have changed from working with us is what I’m most grateful for. These changes are not just physical, their overall health is improving so they can live longer and happier lives.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In 2017, I was involved in a car accident where I was hit from behind while sitting still in traffic on the interstate. I had several herniated and bulging discs in my lower back. For the next 6 months following the accident, I was at doctors and physical therapists weekly trying to get back to the way of life I had prior to the accident. Many of the doctors recommended me to stop training clients in person because of how much time I was spending on my feet daily. I let my passion for helping others take over and focused on creating as many success stories with my clients as possible.
In a way, the accident was a blessing because I doubled down on myself and the business grew almost double that year. I had more transformations than any year prior. This motivated me to continue making improvements in therapy so I could be the best version of myself for the clients who I was blessed with the opportunity to coach.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I strive to make every single client a walking billboard for Spitz Fitness. In order to do that, I have to give them the best coaching in and out of the gym. We all know that people can work hard in the gym and then do nothing in their day to day life. We work together to build healthy life long habits that will help them take a step forward towards their goals everyday. This builds momentum over time and the compounding interest starts paying dividends with the way they look, the compliments they get from their friends and family, and overall health improvements. When people then ask them how they are doing it, they will refer someone to Spitz Fitness.
