Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Carmine Ussano. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Carmine, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
What my parents did right was simple, but powerful — they taught me dignity, responsibility, and pride in hard work. We did not grow up with much, but my parents made sure I understood that your word matters, your work matters, and how you treat people matters most. My mother, before I lost her at such a young age, showed me love, warmth, and strength. Even in difficult moments, she carried herself with grace. Losing her when I was nine forced me to grow up early, but it also gave me a deep inner resilience that has stayed with me my entire life.
My father was a very gentle soul but had to sacrifice a lot and work very hard to be able to raise me and my sister by himself. He didn’t speak much about success, but he lived it through action. He worked hard, never complained, and always finished what he started. One thing he used to tell me was, “Respect your work, and people will respect you.” That stayed with me. Years later, when I came to the United States alone, with no safety net, I carried his voice with me. When things were difficult — and many times they were — quitting was never an option because I knew what perseverance looked like.
In my career today, whether building my private luxury tours in Italy or creating Osteria500, I see their influence in everything I do. I believe in authenticity, in earning trust, and in delivering excellence with heart. My parents didn’t give me wealth or connections — they gave me values. And those values built my life. Their lessons became my foundation, and their strength became my direction.

Carmine, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those discovering my story for the first time, I am an entrepreneur shaped by resilience, migration, and a deep connection to my Italian roots. I was born in Italy and came to the United States alone, with no guarantees — only determination, discipline, and a vision to build something meaningful. My life experiences, including losing my mother at a young age and my father a few years ago, taught me strength, independence, and the importance of perseverance. Those values became the foundation of both my life and my business.
I am the founder and owner of Private Luxury Tours in Italy Inc, as well as Osteria500. My work is not simply about travel or hospitality — it is about creating authentic, emotional, and unforgettable experiences. Through my private tours, I offer clients exclusive access to Italy beyond the typical tourist path: hidden villages, private guides, extraordinary food and wine, cultural depth, and seamless, personalized service. Every itinerary is carefully crafted to reflect elegance, authenticity, and a true sense of place. Osteria500 represents another part of my identity — my passion for Italian tradition, quality, and the experience of bringing people together through food, wine, culture, and atmosphere.
What sets me apart is that my business is deeply personal. I don’t sell packages — I create experiences built on trust, relationships, and attention to detail. I understand Italy not only as a destination, but as home. I know its rhythm, its people, its hidden beauty, and I translate that into something truly special for my clients. Many travelers want luxury, but true luxury today is personalization, authenticity, and peace of mind — knowing every detail has been handled with care.
The problems I solve for my clients are simple but important: saving them time, removing uncertainty, and transforming a trip into a meaningful life experience. My clients don’t want generic travel — they want access, depth, and seamless excellence. I provide that by combining local knowledge, trusted relationships, and a relentless commitment to quality.
What I am most proud of is not just the businesses I built, but the journey itself. I started with nothing but belief and work ethic. Everything I created came through persistence, sacrifice, and passion. I am proud that my brand represents authenticity, trust, and excellence — and that my clients return not only for the destinations, but for the experience and connection.
What I want people to know about me and my work is simple: this is not just a business, it is personal. My story, my roots, and my values live inside everything I create. I believe in doing things the right way, with heart, precision, and respect for the people I serve. Success, to me, is not only measured in growth, but in impact — in the memories created, the trust earned, and the experiences that stay with people long after the journey ends.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the most defining pivots in my life came when I realized that building a business is not just about offering a service — it is about adapting to change while staying true to your values. Early in my journey, I was focused on creating traditional travel experiences connected to Italy. But as the world changed, especially during periods when travel became uncertain and restricted, I faced a moment that forced me to rethink everything.
Instead of stepping back, I pivoted. I shifted my focus from simply organizing trips to designing deeply personalized, high-touch experiences that clients could trust completely. I strengthened my relationships on the ground in Italy, refined every detail of the client journey, and elevated my standards to match what true luxury travelers were seeking — authenticity, privacy, flexibility, and peace of mind. That pivot transformed my business. It moved me from being part of the travel industry to creating a distinct, experience-driven brand.
Another pivot was deeply personal. Coming to the United States alone required me to reinvent myself completely — new language, new culture, no safety net, only determination. During the hardest moments, I often found strength in the memories of my grandparents and family members who had passed away. Their presence, their sacrifices, and the love they gave me continued to guide me, especially in the deepest and most difficult times. Those memories reminded me who I was, where I came from, and why I could never give up.
These experiences taught me that a pivot is not a setback; it is an opportunity to realign, grow, and move forward with greater clarity. Today, whether in my luxury tour business or through Osteria500, I carry that lesson with me. Resilience, adaptability, and purpose are what allow both a person and a business to evolve, even in uncertain times.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One moment that truly illustrates my resilience was when I first arrived in the United States alone. I had no safety net, limited language, and no clear roadmap — only determination and the values my family had given me. Everything was unfamiliar, and there were many times when the weight of starting over felt overwhelming.
I remember walking for hours through the streets of New York City, and later in Florida, feeling completely alone — broke, homesick, and unsure of where to go or what to do. I did not know anyone. There were moments when the silence felt heavy and the future felt uncertain. But even in those difficult times, I kept moving forward. Giving up was never an option.
In my deepest moments, I found strength in the memories of my mother, whom I lost when I was nine, and later in the memories of my father, grandparents, and loved ones who had passed away. I would think about their sacrifices, their courage, and the dignity with which they faced life. Those memories reminded me who I was and gave me the strength to continue, even when I felt lost.
Over time, that resilience became the foundation of everything I built. From those lonely streets to building my business and creating meaningful experiences for others, every step came from persistence, sacrifice, and belief. Resilience is not about avoiding hardship — it is about continuing despite it. And those difficult days shaped the person and the path I walk today.
