We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sophie Stern a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sophie, appreciate you joining us today. What’s something crazy on unexpected that’s happened to you or your business
One of the reasons I finally took the plunge and started writing fiction was because another author believed in me. Now, I try to always support new and aspiring authors, as well. I meet a lot of readers at book events each year, and many of them are working on a novel.
The craziest thing that’s happened to me as an author? I think it was when I told someone at an event that I knew she could finish her book and that I wanted a copy. A year later, she came to see me at a singing and showed me her published novel! I was so proud. Moments like that make me so filled with joy for the bookish community.

Sophie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I love writing romance books where the characters really come alive. Each of my books is different, but in general, readers can expect to meet sassy heroines, snarky heroes, and lots of pet cats! I write vampires, shifters, bad boys, heroes, and everything in between.
My latest book, Not All Treasure, is a pirate romance standalone featuring a broody pirate who has no idea he’s about to fall in love.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
For me, social media is one of the most effective ways I can stay in touch with my readers. It’s low cost or free, and I can communicate as much as I like.
For someone just starting out, I think consistency really is key. Most people worry about posting too much, but I think it’s important to post MORE. More content (GOOD content) means more visibility.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I really believe in supporting other authors and readers. Books are one of those fun products you can never have too many of, so keeping that at the front and center of my marketing strategies has been important.
I also focus on creating fun, interesting stories my readers will love. Whether they’re reading about a vampire boss (like in “You’re My Favorite”) or a sassy pirate (like in “Scallywag”), I want them to enjoy the journey.
