We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shannon Jennings a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shannon, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
I believe meaningful growth begins with genuine connection. From the very beginning, I focused on cultivating strong, lasting relationships with my clients – because trust, once earned, creates its own momentum. I take the time to truly know the women I serve, and that level of care can’t be manufactured. Many of my brides come to me through personal referrals, which has been the most affirming part of scaling my business. Nearly every weekend of the year is booked, and more than 80% of my work bomes from past brides, planners, and venue partners who confidently recommend me. In many ways, my business has not grown through aggressive marketing, but through consistency, intention, and relationships built on genuire care.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My passion for hair and makeup ignited at a young age, as I spent countless hours mesmerized at my mother’s vanity. Long before social media took over, I studied the art of beauty from iconic magazines like Vogue and Vanity Fair, drawn to the storytelling behind each picture, dissecting the stunning looks of the models, and analyzing the techniques that went into creating them. The interplay of colors and textures fascinated me, and by the time I was around ten, I eagerly offered makeovers to anyone who would sit still long enough to let me practice. I’ve always believed that beauty exists in every line and wrinkle, each telling a unique story. This deep respect for the craft and the people I serve has been the foundation of my work and the solid reputation I’ve built.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
My past clients have been my greatest source of new business. Their positive experiences and word-of-mouth referrals have acted as my best advertisement. I truly appreciate their trust and support, as it has helped my business grow organically through genuine recommendations.
One of the greatest joys of my work is building lasting relationships with women. I’ve walked alongside so many seasons of life – from their engagement to motherhood and everything in between. I love having a front row seat to my clients’ journeys.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
That’s easy. I love this question. I believe reputation is built in the quiet moments – through care, presence, and the way someone feels when they are entrusted to you. I approach each bride with intention, honoring the significance of her day and the emotion behind it. My work is never transactional; it’s about creating a sense of calm, beauty, and confidence in a once-in-a-lifetime moment. That depth of care has naturally shaped my reputation through lasting trust and genuine relationships.
