We recently connected with Aliyah Roettgers and have shared our conversation below.
Aliyah, appreciate you joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
One of the biggest risks I’ve taken was deciding to treat my creative work like a real business instead of keeping it as a safe side project.
When I first started, I intentionally kept things small. I loved the work, but I was afraid of failing publicly and overextending myself. As a wife and mom, the idea of taking a financial and emotional risk felt heavy because my decisions affected more than just me. Staying comfortable felt responsible.
The risk came when I chose to fully commit. I raised my prices, showed up consistently, and allowed myself to be seen and taken seriously. It was uncomfortable and scary, especially while balancing family life, but I knew staying small was holding me back.
The result was growth I did not expect. I attracted better-aligned clients, gained confidence, and built a business that feels sustainable and purposeful. That experience taught me that calculated risks, even when they feel intimidating, can lead to meaningful growth when they are rooted in clarity and commitment.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a wife, a mother, and a photographer, and at the center of all of it is my faith. My love for Jesus is the foundation of who I am and the reason I am where I am today. Every step of my business has been shaped by prayer, trust, and a deep belief that this work is part of the calling God placed on my life.
I am a wedding and engagement photographer who also captures lifestyle moments, from growing families to everyday seasons that often go unnoticed. I was drawn to photography because I have always been deeply observant and emotionally intuitive. I noticed how quickly moments pass and how powerful it is to be able to preserve them. What started as a creative outlet slowly became something more meaningful as I realized how much images can hold memory, connection, and legacy.
My work is centered on storytelling. I do not just photograph how something looks, but how it feels. Whether it is a wedding day, an engagement session, or a quiet lifestyle moment, my goal is to create images that feel honest, emotional, and timeless. I aim to make my clients feel comfortable, seen, and fully themselves so their photos reflect who they truly are, not a posed version of them.
What sets me apart is the way I approach people. I bring empathy, calm, and intentionality into every space I photograph. As a wife and mother, I understand the importance of meaningful moments and the value of documenting life as it really is. I also believe my faith gives me a deep sense of purpose and care in the way I serve others.
What I am most proud of is building a business that aligns with my values, serves families and couples well, and allows me to use my creativity in a way that honors God. I want potential clients and followers to know that when they work with me, they are getting more than photos. They are getting someone who genuinely cares about their story and is committed to capturing it with intention, heart, and authenticity.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the most defining pivots in my life was transitioning from a stable clinical career into becoming my own boss.
I earned my degree in psychology and spent years working as a psychometrist, at Washington University. On paper, it was a dream job. It was stable, respected, and something many people would consider the safe path. I was good at it and learned so much about people, behavior, and emotional intelligence during that time.
At the same time, I felt a growing pull toward creativity and entrepreneurship. Photography had become more than a hobby, and I realized that the skills I used daily in psychology were deeply connected to how I approached storytelling, connection, and human emotion through my work. Still, walking away from a secure career to pursue something uncertain felt risky, especially as a wife and mother.
The pivot came when I decided to trust that calling and take the leap into running my own business. It required redefining success, letting go of external validation, and stepping into leadership over my own life and time. While the transition was uncomfortable and filled with uncertainty, it ultimately aligned my work with who I am at my core.
That pivot taught me that growth often requires releasing what is comfortable in order to step into what is meaningful. Today, I see how my background in psychology strengthens my work as a photographer and business owner, allowing me to connect deeply with clients and create work that is intentional, empathetic, and emotionally grounded.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for my business has been a combination of word of mouth referrals and social media.
Past clients have played a huge role in my growth. When someone has a meaningful experience and feels seen and cared for, they naturally want to share that with friends and family. Many of my couples and families come from referrals, which tells me the work and the experience are just as impactful as the final images.
Social media has supported that growth by allowing people to consistently see my work, my storytelling style, and the heart behind my brand. It helps potential clients feel connected to me before we ever meet and builds trust over time. When social media and referrals work together, it creates a steady, organic flow of clients who already align with my values and approach.
That combination has allowed my business to grow in a way that feels authentic, sustainable, and rooted in genuine relationships rather than constant selling.
