Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brian Emmel. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brian, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
I was asked to teach guitar at Franklin Guitar & Repair in a small 4×8 room. The landlord said he has rooms upstairs that I could see and teach in. I followed him outside, and up the stairs, when he opened the door, I was in shock! There was a waiting area, bathroom, and 5 other rooms. I said, I’ll take it! In a short time thereafter, I opened up Grand Staff Music School and held a Grand Opening, and started hiring teachers.

Brian, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve always had a passion for playing music. After getting guitar lessons at a young age, I got good enough to play in local bands. As I got more and more into music, I wanted to keep aspiring to my heroes. This led to getting schooled in music, which took me to Musicians’ Institute in Los Angeles, CA. After my schooling, I got a book publishing deal for writing music instructional books and DVDs. This all leads to a teaching career ultimately. I moved to Nashville, TN, in 2003 and taught at local music stores. In 2008, I opened my own music teaching studio in Franklin, TN.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The road was unknown and scary! But, as I stepped out little by little, my business began to grow by word of mouth. And having a great staff of teachers who are great with kids truly helped. Grand Staff Music School grew steadily since 2008.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I was teaching guitar and bass guitar at a local music store in Nashville, TN. I had a full roster of students there, and I slowly grew my business to where I was cutting single days off as I transferred to my new location. This took approximately six months until I got down to a day or two at the music store, and they told me I might as well quit.
