We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Elizabeth Golden a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Elizabeth thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
I accidentally became a Kansas City wedding photographer after getting fired from a job in the journalism industry. Journalism had been my entire world. I grew up in it, studied it in college, and graduated right as newspapers were rapidly disappearing.
I had learned photography through journalism while working for a small newspaper, so I already owned a camera and had the technical foundation. I remember sitting there thinking, “Okay… what’s next?” Half joking, I told my now-husband that maybe I should start a photography business. He didn’t hesitate and told me to go for it.
I started by offering free photo sessions to family and friends to build a portfolio. Through that, a friend of a friend reached out and asked if I would photograph their wedding. I had never shot a wedding before. In hindsight, it was a bold move and probably not the safest choice, but the couple loved their photos and trusted me completely.
That first paid wedding was unplanned and completely accidental, but it changed everything. It sparked a genuine love for wedding photography and set me on a path where I learned everything I possibly could. That unexpected first client is what ultimately led me to build my career as a Kansas City wedding photographer today.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Elizabeth, the owner of E. Golden Moments, and I’m a Kansas City wedding photographer and videographer who specializes in candid, true-to-color storytelling for couples who want their day to feel relaxed, organized, and genuinely fun.
I came from a journalism background, which shaped everything about how I work. I was trained to observe, anticipate moments before they happen, and tell a complete story instead of manufacturing one. When the newspaper industry collapsed, I didn’t set out to become a wedding photographer on purpose. It happened accidentally, and then it clicked fast. Weddings combine people, emotion, pressure, timelines, chaos, and meaning all in one day. That mix is exactly where I thrive. Once I photographed my first wedding, I knew this wasn’t just a creative outlet. It was the place where my skills actually mattered.
Today, E. Golden Moments offers wedding photography and videography for couples who care deeply about real moments but still want guidance and structure. Most of my clients feel awkward in front of the camera and worry about looking stiff or fake. My job is to remove that fear entirely. I give direction when it matters, step back when it doesn’t, and keep the day moving without it feeling rushed or overproduced. The result is imagery that feels honest, flattering, and timeless, not trendy or overly posed.
One of the biggest problems I solve for couples is stress. Wedding days can spiral quickly without a photographer who understands lighting, timelines, family dynamics, and how to calmly take control when needed. I’m known for being highly organized, proactive, and steady under pressure. I don’t just show up and take photos. I help shape a smoother wedding day so my couples can actually enjoy it. From managing timelines to adapting to bad lighting or weather, I make sure nothing derails the experience or the final gallery.
What sets E. Golden Moments apart is consistency and intention. My editing stays true to real skin tones and natural color. My approach balances documentary storytelling with confident guidance. I also lead a small, trained team, which allows us to serve couples with the same level of care, professionalism, and quality no matter the size of the wedding.
What I’m most proud of is building a brand that couples trust completely. Many of my clients tell me they felt calmer the moment I arrived on the wedding day, and that means more to me than any award. I’m proud that my work reflects real relationships, real emotion, and real connection, not a curated version of a wedding that never actually existed.
The most important thing I want potential clients to know is this. You don’t have to be comfortable in front of a camera to get meaningful, beautiful photos and video. You don’t have to perform or pose all day. If you value authenticity, organization, and a photographer who knows when to lead and when to disappear, E. Golden Moments was built for you.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What built my reputation wasn’t a single viral moment or a shortcut. It was consistency and follow-through, especially when no one was watching.
From the beginning, I treated every wedding like it mattered deeply, because it did. I showed up prepared, calm, and organized, even when timelines fell apart or lighting was terrible. Couples talk, planners talk, and venues remember the vendors who make their jobs easier instead of harder. Being someone others could trust under pressure made a huge difference in how my name spread within the Kansas City wedding market.
I also stayed very clear about what I do well and refused to chase every trend. I focused on candid, true-to-color storytelling and delivering galleries that felt honest and timeless. That consistency meant clients knew exactly what they were getting, and referrals stayed aligned with my style instead of random or mismatched.
Another major factor was communication. I set expectations early, explained my process clearly, and didn’t disappear after the contract was signed. Clients felt taken care of before, during, and after the wedding day, which led to genuine reviews and repeat referrals.
Finally, I invested in learning the craft and the business side at the same time. I improved my technical skills, my workflow, and my client experience year after year instead of plateauing. My reputation grew because people saw growth, professionalism, and reliability, not just pretty images.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
For E. Golden Moments, managing a team has always been very intentional, especially when it came to training my associates. I didn’t just bring them on and hand them a camera. I trained them the same way I built the brand.
They all started by assisting and observing, not shooting lead. That phase mattered. They learned how I communicate with couples, how I manage timelines, how I read a room, and how I stay calm when something goes off plan. Technical skill is important, but understanding *how* we show up on a wedding day is non-negotiable.
Once they moved into shooting, the expectations were extremely clear. I walked them through exactly how E. Golden Moments photographs and films a wedding. What moments matter most, when to step in with direction, when to disappear, how to handle difficult lighting, and how to interact with families and vendors. We reviewed galleries together. We talked through decisions, mistakes, and wins without ego.
I also made consistency a priority. My associates are trained to deliver the same level of organization, calm leadership, and true-to-color storytelling that my name stands for. They know the standard and they protect it.
What made the training successful is trust paired with accountability. I gave them room to grow, but I stayed involved. Feedback was direct, timely, and specific. There was no guessing where they stood or what needed improvement.
At the end of the day, I built the team the same way I built the business. Clear expectations, steady leadership, and a shared commitment to serving couples well. That’s why I can confidently send my associates to represent E. Golden Moments and know the experience and final work will reflect the brand every time.
