We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful ChaKiva Latrell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with ChaKiva below.
ChaKiva, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I design and make custom special occasion gowns and apparel for women, specifically curvy and full figured women. Many come to me because they want trendy and high fashioned styles that are not readily available. They also want a figure flattering fit.
I had a client hire me to create a pageant gown for her pageant competition. She wanted to dazzle on the pageant stage, but she had concerns about being able to find a style that would best compliment her full-figured frame. She stands 6′ tall and wears a size 22. This project was meaningful to me because it challenged me with accommodating her request for a trendy and high fashioned pageant style that would fit her body perfectly.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Designing gowns wasn’t something I stumbled into by accident, it grew directly out of my own lived experience, my love of fashion, and my refusal to accept the idea that luxury has a size limit. My brand, ChaKiva Latrell Luxe Collection is built on the belief that glamour, confidence, and couture-level craftsmanship belong to everybody.
My journey into custom fashion design started long before I ever drafted a sketch or stitched a gown for a client. I was once a full-figured woman but recently went through my own fitness journey and lost about 70 pounds. I understand too often that curvy and plus-size women are asked to “make do” instead of being fully celebrated. I knew firsthand how difficult it could be to find garments that not only fit properly but also felt intentional, elevated, and worthy of big moments. That frustration planted the seed. I wanted to ensure women of all sizes including plus sized women could enjoy this luxury.
The style of gowns I design is unapologetically luxe. My work leans heavily into high fashion drama, sculptural silhouettes, and pageant-level impact. I specialize in high-fashion pageant gowns, custom eveningwear, and statement pieces that command attention the moment a woman enters the room. Think bold structure, strategic embellishment, intentional cut-outs, and designs that highlight curves instead of hiding them. Every gown is created to make the wearer feel powerful, polished, and unforgettable.
One of the biggest problems I solve for my clients is fit, real fit, not just sizing up a straight-size pattern and hoping for the best. Curvy and plus-size bodies are beautifully diverse, and they require thoughtful design decisions. I pay close attention to proportion, support, balance, and movement. From proper bust support to waist placement, hip shaping, and fabric selection, every element is considered. Styling is equally important like knowing where to place drama, where to simplify, and how to visually elongate or emphasize based on the client’s goals and the event they’re dressing for.
What truly sets me apart is that I design with my clients, not just for them. My process is collaborative and deeply personal. I listen to how a woman wants to feel in her gown and I translate that into a design that honors her body and her moment. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all glamour. I believe in custom luxury that reflects individuality.
What I’m most proud of is the transformation I witness every time a client sees herself in her gown for the first time. There’s a shift. Her shoulders lift, posture changes, and her confidence locks in. That moment reminds me why I do this work. I’m proud that my brand also creates space for curvy and plus-size women to experience fashion at its highest level, without compromise.
For potential clients, I want you to know that ChaKiva Latrell Luxe Collection is about more than a dress. It’s about trust, craftsmanship, and intentional design. Every gown is custom created with precision, honesty, and respect for your body. I value clear communication, thoughtful timelines, and delivering a finished piece that feels as extraordinary as the occasion you’re wearing it for.
Luxury should feel personal. Fashion should feel affirming. And every woman regardless of size, deserves a gown that makes her feel like the main character. That’s the heart of my brand, and it’s what I bring to every single design.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is watching an idea move from imagination into something real that connects with people. There’s a quiet magic in trusting your vision, even before anyone else can see it, and then witnessing how that creation makes someone feel seen, confident, or inspired. For me, creativity isn’t just about making something beautiful, it’s about expression, impact, and the freedom to tell stories without words. That moment when your work resonates with someone else reminds you that creativity has purpose, and that’s where the true reward lives.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
There was a point in my custom business when I realized I had to pivot or risk being left behind. The rapid rise of fast fashion, with brands like Shein and Fashion Nova copying independent designers’ work and producing it at lightning speed, changed the landscape in a way that made originality harder to protect and custom timelines harder to compete with. Instead of fighting the shift, I adapted. I expanded my creativity into custom leather accessories and introduced a remix service, where I rework gowns that my clients already own or even pieces they’ve purchased from fast fashion retailers. By transforming those garments with custom detailing, structure, and flair, I’m able to restore individuality and luxury. That pivot allowed me to stay in the game while reinforcing what matters most to me, creativity, craftsmanship, and giving women something truly their own.
