We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nikki Serenity a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nikki, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
Absolutely! I’m very active online and on social media. That comes with some of its own issues. I feel like people judge me and assume things about me based off of what they see online. I’ve been told that people thought I was going to be mean and then they met me and I was really nice. I always tell people that you shouldn’t make judgments about people before you meet them.I have a whole life and personality outside of what you see on social media.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Nickie Serenity and I’m a model, Influencer, actress, Brand Ambassador, and freelance gig worker. I always knew I wanted to model since before high school. I knew I had the drive and I ambition to work hard to get there, but I didn’t know where to start. I was blessed enough to meet people who helped me get started and it all just blossomed from there. Modeling and acting overlap a lot so that inevitably came next. A girl I met through modeling introduced me to brand ambassador work, which also changed my life. Influencer work also overlaps quite a bit so I eventually got into that as well. I always knew I wanted to do some thing with social media so I started building my following as a very young teenager.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I grew up extremely depressed, anxious, full of self-hatred, and self harming. I was very messed up, especially around the ages of 11-13. My first relationship turned into a story of ghosting, neglect, emotional abuse, being homeless in another city at 17, etc. I went through some crazy things and worked my butt off to conquer chronic depression and anxiety. My self esteem and confidence are so much better. Now I’m a successful model, influencer, actress, brand ambassador who has been on Dr. Phil, The Daily Mail twice, over 100 magazines, billboards, album covers, movies and shows, worked with celebrities, etc. No one can stop the destiny of a girl who has been through so much and is determined to be happy and successful.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Some people assume that I just do this for fun. Yes it’s fun, but it’s also work and I have bills to pay like everyone else. It’s not typically work I can just do for free for the fun of it. It takes time, work, energy, etc. Some people don’t see creative jobs as actual jobs, and I wish that could change. I put in too much time and energy for it to be seen as anything different.
