Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Camilla Currin Baird. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Camilla thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear a story from back when you were an intern or apprentice. What’s a memorable story you can share with us?
I never had to complete an apprentice or internship, but I certainly feel like I did. I got my start in the floral industry when I was 17 years old in the floral department at Kroger. I had always had kind of an obsession with plants and then being around the flowers just kind of lit a fire from within. I then went on and got 12 certifications in floral design and running a retail business. Over the next few years, I bounced around in Dallas between working for The Ivy Basket Florist and Calloway’s Nursery. I learned a lot about what not to do by working for The Ivy Basket. Even at such a young age, I couldn’t believe all of the bad business decisions I witnessed the owner make on almost a daily basis. Needless to say, she ended up closing her doors and couldn’t pay me my last paycheck.
Camilla , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been in the industry on and off for the past 33 years. I have worked extremely hard to get where I am today, having twelve certifications in floral design and have won multiple awards for my work. Last year, we started providing weekly florals for Tiffany And Co. That’s been so exciting for me as I dabbed a little bit into fashion merchandising before I figured out flowers were going to be my thing. House Of Flowers offers everything from daily delivery, weddings and events and floral subscriptions for home and office. There’s not much we don’t do! Definitely what sets us apart from the competition is our unique sense of style. We only use luxury florals and we like to incorporate all sorts of different pods, succulents, dried materials, herbs and fruits into our arrangements. Our clients constantly inform us that they only use us because we always provide unique and innovative works of art. We are known as “artists” in our area and we couldn’t be more proud!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
We have built our reputation on being very personable with our customers. When our clients call us they are either happy that they are sending something to someone they love on a joyous occasion, or they are sad that they are having to send a sympathy arrangement. It’s important to always engage with their feelings on a personal level because part of the experience they are seeking is the reassurance that you are going to take good care of them and their recepient.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The best strategy you can have today as a business owner are good reviews on all media platforms. A majority of our new clients say they called us because we have 79 five star Google reviews.
