We recently connected with Danny Arguello and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Danny, thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
I started my business during the height of pandemic in 2020. Imagine at that time I had been coaching basketball for 9 years and had an informal education on how to properly train high level athletes. I never would have thought to be a basketball trainer prior to 2019. The basketball training industry took off during the mid 2010s, but I always thought of myself as a coach not a skills trainer. In 2019 I was presented with an opportunity to help out with skills trainings done at Miami Basketball Academy. This is where I started to learn about the real craft of being a basketball trainer. A lot of the things that I had been doing in the past as a coach were being used during trainings there with a different terminology, but the methodology was the same. If I could change something I would have started the formal basketball training business when the boom happened in the 2010s. I believe that I would have a bit more notoriety and experience because of the earlier start. I am grateful that I got the start when I did because everything around me was dire due to the pandemic. This business has given me something to strive for. I have found my purpose, which is to help out the youth in my community.

Danny, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been a basketball trainer since 2020. I have created a safe space for basketball players of all levels to work on their craft without fear of being judged. My role is to create positivity as a player grows through this game. What I do is about more than basketball as I provide life skills that accompany this wonderful game that we get to play. My training involves critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills. Sometimes all a player needs is someone that believes in them and gives them that chance to learn how to play the right way, I feel that I give those that cross my path that opportunity to show what they are made of. Many players have improved under my guidance and I feel the main reason for this is because I am not afraid to teach the smallest details of the game and I am not afraid to work with anyone regardless of skill level. I pride myself in providing high quality, consistent, game-like training.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe my background had a lot to do with my reputation. I was one of the top players on a team ranked 7th in their classification in the state. I played college basketball at the NAIA level. As a coach, I have proven my success with 6 district championships combined between coaching boy’s and girl’s basketball. I am now the assistant coach for Florida National University Women’s basketball. I also showcase my talents in various leagues and I feel that clients in my industry gravitate toward those that can demonstrate how the game is supposed to be played versus those that did not have that type of experience. The advent of social media has helped me push my message across to many that I otherwise would not have touched. This is not a gimmick there is more substance than there is style behind my craft and those in my industry appreciate that.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Ironically word of mouth is the best source for me. I can post various things on social media and that does generate leads, but when someone sees progress or is happy about how their sessions are going they usually let others know about it and it generates more interest in the program. Many new clients come via referrals from current clients. I always make sure to stick to my principles of consistency and attention to detail. A client is not just a client to me because when we are training it’s about establishing trust and building relationships that go beyond the game.
