We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mona Harry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mona, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your professional career?
The most important lesson and experience I had on a prior job was learning how to guard the heart of other people. I worked with a lady who was a single mom with one child. This lady was in her late forties; maybe her early fifties. Unfortunately, the child’s father was not in their lives and with having her first and only child so late in life this made things difficult for her. She always had a negative attitude and the other co-workers didn’t care to be around her. If someone said good morning she would respond by either saying, “there’s nothing good about it” or she would simply say, “morning.” As I watched her function throughout the day God spoke to my heart and said “she acts this way because she had a child late in life and the father abandon them; guard her heart.” From this I learned, there is a story behind every action and reaction that we may not know about. So, instead of reacting the same way this person is acting, we should understand there is deep pain there and treat that person with kindness and the love of God.
Mona, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am an encourager, wife, mother, author and true friend. I developed a joy for writing in the 7th grade; I’m 53 years young now. I love creative writing and I enjoy creating encouraging videos that tells a person’s story. What sets me apart from others is the gift of being creative in a way that brings glory to God. I have had many people tell me how much my poetry encourages and inspires their lives. I am most proud of my life as a daughter, wife and mother but most of all, being a child of God. I want people to know, even though I may not know you, I care about your heart! And if there is anything I can do to create something special for You and only You, I would love to have the opportunity to do so.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
We have so many avenues available for creatives such as: American Idol, America’s Got Talent, Sunday’s Best, So You Think You Can Dance, and so on. But I don’t know of any avenues for literary talent. People will buy a singer’s music or suggest an actor/actress’s movie to go see and these are things that makes a person well known. But it’s hard for a struggling author as myself to become well known. The key for someone like myself is word-of-mouth. We need the people who aren’t necessarily trying to make it in the literary world to buy our books or creative writings and spread the word just as they would for a famous actor/actress or singer; support means everything.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to help people open their eyes to what’s going on in their own backyards; so to speak. My goal is for people to have a discerning spirit to hear those silent yells for help. The mission that drives my creative journey is, once again, an individual’s heart. We live in a world were people are so discouraged and sometimes carry that discouragement within themselves and never seek help. My creative journey was design to let people know; you are not alone; just reach out because help is there. Don’t be ashamed nor intimidated because life is more than just you existing; it means living! What does that mean? Well, I am glad you asked. It means, a table exist but it’s not living.
