We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Theresa of Raine and Rose Co. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Theresa below.
Theresa, thanks for taking the time to share Raine and Rose’s story with us today! Can you talk to us about how you and your business partner, Cheyenne, learned to do what you do?
While we both have degrees, the bulk of our skills were learned and honed actively on various jobs or self-taught using online or in-person resources. Maintaining and evolving our education and skills are values that we love to invest in, be it through workshops, courses, seminars, books, Youtube, or however else the knowledge can be obtained. We think comparison and imposter syndrome are two of the biggest obstacles to learning and growing in business. Looking around at others’ skills and making the assumption that they must have significant training as well as feeling as though you yourself could never be on someone else’s level prohibits growth. And in that vein, problem solving skills are among the most valuable skills because really the biggest thing standing in your way is self-imposed limitation. Coming upon an obstacle or something you don’t already know is inevitable, so looking at it and thinking, “How can I learn this? How can I overcome this?” is an amazing skill to have. Beyond that, skills that we view as essential are organization and communication and, to aid those skills, getting familiar with Google’s business services is really handy. We use Google Calendar, Google Drive, Google Meet, and Gmail daily. The best way to speed up the learning process is to act. Practical, active learning is so valuable because, for instance we began as a publishing company. Upon launching our business and pursuing our goals, we were able to redefine what we wanted to do and our purpose, and the skills we learned and practiced as a publishing company are skills that we use in our new phase of business.

Theresa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Raine and Rose Co. began as Raine Publishing, a publishing company helping poets share their voices and stories. We are both self-published authors with an understanding of how overwhelming and difficult the process can be, so we sought to be a one-stop shop for authors’ publishing needs. We had in-house editors and designers, and we also provided marketing aid. As we came to understand where potential clients’ actual needs lie as well as what we feel passionate about and love doing, we rebranded to Raine and Rose Co. and now specialize in nurturing the passions of fellow creatives and small business owners through branding and design services. We help brands develop and hone in on their message and empower them to present it in the most authentic way. With services and tiers to fit different starting points, we get to know the personality and voice of a brand and then devise a brand identity and assets that reflect accordingly. Design work includes both print and digital options, such as packaging, book covers, social media graphics, and email newsletters. Photography and videography, specifically lifestyle photography that tells a story while showcasing your products or services, are utilized within these services and can also be requested as its own service. We also offer marketing direction for social media, blogs, newsletters, and more. We love to work with creatives and small businesses who view and treat their work as a passion project, because that’s how we view our work! We love to help provide the tools and guidance to nurture brands and emphasize a strong work-life balance so as to avoid burn out. To love and care for your work includes caring for yourself, and that is a value that we hold dear and infuse within our business. For those who are not ready to work with us directly, our website offers plenty of education and resources to help get you started and we also offer the option of scheduling a discovery call to chat about your goals and determine how we can help you! We want working with us and developing your brand to feel like lovingly watering the seeds that you’ve planted.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
We actually met on social media! We were both heavily engaged in the writing community on Instagram, and supported each other in that way for a long time. Eventually, we developed a friendship due to continuous support and conversation online, primarily about our writing. We read and reviewed each others’ books, commented on each others’ posts, and sent messages back and forth. We still have yet to meet in person (soon, fingers crossed!), but we FaceTime each other almost every day and of course text and email constantly.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
We would say the most rewarding part of being a creative is the potential for each day and each client to present something new and different, and being a creative gives us the opportunity to experiment and better our skills. For example, Cheyenne had no idea she would love email marketing and be willing to play with new designs and CTAs within an email system and Theresa loves to find new ways to create a moment within a photo. It is so fun and enriching to test ourselves and continuously discover all that we are capable of!
