Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Will Hammond. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Will, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
On every Scrappy Scraper, there’s a line: “Accidentally designed in California.” It’s not just a joke, it’s the real origin story. We didn’t set out to revolutionize BBQ cleaning. The idea was born from a genuine moment. My brother and co-founder, Miles, reached for a grill brush only to see broken bristles and grease-caked metal. Not only is that completely unsafe, it’s gross. The only thing nearby? An empty paper towel roll. He bent it, scraped the grill, and found it not only cleaned remarkably well, but absorbed grease. We immediately knew we were onto something special. That spontaneous accident led to the first disposable BBQ scraper: safe with no metal fragments, effective as it scrapes steams and seasons, easy as you simply discard after use, and environmentally friendly as it’s 100% recyclable.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Scrappy Scraper is the creation of two brothers: Miles, an award-winning industrial designer, and myself, Will, an internationally awarded marketer. For years, we bounced ideas back and forth, always looking for something that truly excited us both. Scrappy Scraper checked every box.
We quickly learned how much more our invention could do beyond basic cleaning. It scrubs hot or cold grills, steam cleans with water, seasons with oil, and eliminates the risk of metal bristles ending up in your food. There’s no need to clean your cleaning tool—when you’re done, just recycle it. It’s great for grilling at home or on the go, tailgating, camping, picnics, anywhere. Most of all, Scrappy Scraper is 100% biodegradable, so it’s as kind to the planet as it is practical for grill-lovers.
Our proudest moment so far is seeing customers’ eyes light up when they realize they now have a safe and easy solution they can use anywhere. People who BBQ are a passionate group, and we’re excited to bring this new solution to them all. From beginners to pros, from daily grillers to occasional grillers, from the obsessed to the hobbyist, from the home to adventure grillers, we’re proud to share an idea born from a happy accident.

Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
Right from the start, we realized that not just any cardboard would do. After lots of prototyping (and failed attempts), we partnered with a fantastic Canadian manufacturing partner we were lucky to connect with early on. Together, we designed a custom, food-safe cardboard—sturdy enough to clean, soft enough to conform to any grill, non-toxic (even the glue is corn starch-based), completely recycled, and compostable. The biggest surprise has been how tough it is to add US manufacturing; we’ve found interest, but no one has matched the quality of our original partner. The key takeaway? Never settle—your product’s quality and integrity matter most, even if it means unexpected challenges or longer shipping

Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
We started on Amazon to reach grillers where they’re shopping already. The platform’s ready-made audience, streamlined shipping, and promotional tools made the decision easy. After our initial success, we launched our own website scrappyscraper.com, offering a trial pack so people can try us out before buying a full box. The benefit of our own store? Direct customer relationships and feedback are invaluable. Amazon gives us reach; our site gives us connection.
