We recently connected with Anita Oksanen Morford and have shared our conversation below.
Anita, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I started drawing at very young age. Being involved with horses at young age really helped me learn the anatomy and they different characters.
Once I started school I was not encouraged to pursue my artistic career. I was often told to stop doodling and concentrate on finding a real job in the future.
I wish I would have not listened and would’ve focused on learning more about the art, but Instead I focused on getting career with animals. That actually helped me even more to learn about the subject I wanted to paint.

Anita, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
When I got married and moved from Finland to United States I continued doodling. One day my husband said why don’t you take watercolor class or something since you are always drawing animals.
So I did and fell in love with watercolor and still continue to paint with watercolors to this day.
My specialty is Pet Portraits and Wildlife and I really love capturing the animals essence in my paintings.
I love hearing from clients how I captured the pets looks and personality perfectly.
I also paint with acrylics occasionally on different surfaces.
New media I am experimenting is Resin Art. That is fun new challenge and highly addicting in a good way.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
You are in control of what you want to create and when you want to create most of the time.
To see the end results when you first were thinking how the heck am I going to accomplish this.
I love how lost I get in the process itself where there is just me ,the art, some good music and my dog for company.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Having supportive Art group is very helpful and encouraging. Would love to see people get out more and buy local art more, done by local artists.
