Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to James Gregg. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
James, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My most meaningful project is actually the one I am currently working on. I’m working on a debut album “When The Retard Raps”. Not only will this be my very first album, but it promotes what I am most passionate about, which is mental health. I am a 32 year old neurodivergent from Rock Springs, Wyoming and through this album I want to display that even the mentally ill or mentally challenged can wire their brain to achieve great things while also taking a derogatory word fueled by hate and turning it into a word of strength.

James, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I took an interest in rap and writing lyrics when I was 13. I’ve been consistently writing songs since the age of 16. At one point I had a small fan base of around 600 on social media but as life does, it hit me hard and I had to start over. I’m hoping that with this current album “When The Retard Raps” I will be able to build a healthier audience and fanbase. Hopefully full of others who are as passionate about mental health as I am. Outside of music I am a DSP (Direct Support Provider), which is a position where I work with special needs adults. The clients that I work with on a day to day basis are another reason why I take mental health so seriously and why I want to take a word used to shame others and make it a word to be proud of, a word of strength, a word that simply means to be different. I am also a father of 3 and a husband to a beautiful wife. My wife and I own a small company, Wickedly Righteous Universe, which we started with making custom embroidery work that we do together and some lyric videos for my music and are working on incorporating video game streaming. I currently have a Facebook page dedicated to my music (James Gregg Music) and a YouTube channel (Wicked Righteous Universe) with some older songs that will also include new music and the video game streaming when we get to that. If any of this sparks any interest, give me a chance and when this album drops, you won’t be disappointed.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to prove that even if you believe your nobody, you can still work on your dreams and become somebody.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
What non-creatives might struggle to understand is that my journey comes from the mindset of a neurodivergent and unless you have something similar, some concepts might be hard to comprehend. My suggestion would be to just give others a chance to hear their story and not just judge a book by its cover.
