Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kelly Wasmer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kelly, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
If I could go back in time, I do wish that I would have started acting sooner, as it has been so rewarding for me in so many ways! However, much of acting is drawing upon lived experiences and emotions, so I feel that there was purpose in the delay.
I started taking acting classes during quarantine in 2020, when I became a stay-at-home-mom due to work logistics and my daughter being so young during that uncertainty. My life circumstances allowed me to juggle initial pursuits of acting classes and building up my resume and relationships so that when I did go back to work full-time, I was more established as an actor. I frequently fit projects in whenever possible between my full-time job and time with my kids.

Kelly, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As far back as I can recall, I have always been interested in creative outlets. The specific outlets have varied over the years from entering art competitions in elementary school, taking dance classes, being on the pom team in high school, completing my Bachelor’s in Visual Studies, having a personal interest in interior design, encouraging my kids’ crafting, etc.
With enjoying the many facets of visual art and physical performance, acting seemed like a natural combination and new area to explore.
What I feel sets me apart and I am most proud of is having others want to work with me again and personally recommend me for additional roles. I say all of the time that when I find someone who I enjoy working with, I want to find a way to work with them again. To vouch for someone in this field is to speak for their talent and professionalism. It is a high compliment for others to be so willing to do that for me!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, one of the most rewarding aspects of being an actor is building the relationships and camaraderie with the team behind the scenes. The end product is the sum of everyone’s hard work, and creating a positive work environment helps contribute to that.
It is also rewarding for me to be able to make the audience feel something when watching my performance. Whether the viewer identifies with my character and feels seen and/or is exposed to a different experience which allows them to empathize with others, I want to help contribute to the emotional intelligence of the audience.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Something that drives my creative journey is for my kids to see their mom have a rich, full life that she enjoys!
While my kids are my greatest gift and responsibility, I also have my own identity outside of being a mom. I want them, and particularly other moms, to know that we are not meant to solely support others while neglecting ourselves and our own goals. I got lost down that trap for a while, and acting helped bring me back to myself.
