Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Beatrice Solo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Beatrice, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
I have always been very comfortable with death, which at least in the US I believe is a very uncomfortable subject for most. I have always loved science and nature and death practices as well as conservation from a very young age. The art of taxidermy has evolved and is less seen in your day-to-day household and its more experienced in museums. I think it makes people think about their own mortality more and it makes them uncomfortable. I love the connection I have with my specimens and how it makes me consider my own mortality,

Beatrice, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Almost 10 years ago I was gifted a framed butterfly specimen for my birthday. This grew my obsession with the natural world. Another friend taught me how to pin my own specimens, and the rest is history. After my house exploding with my art and nowhere to go, I decided to open a retail space for likeminded artists. Our little natural history inspired store just recently was able to move into a bigger location after 5 years, with classroom space and even more amazing artists. We focus on local art and underrepresented voices, and every artist is incredible. I continued the practice adding beetles and later moved into taxidermy, specifically birds. I started taking some classes and even mustered up the courage to compete. Winning best of category last year. I also had the opportunity to help in the Ornithology department at the American Museum of Natural History in New York doing study skins. I was able to work with the most amazing specimens!

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Buy LOCAL! Get something unique and special. Artist’s poor their heart and soul into every single piece they create! Don’t have the funds follow and share their social media. To be honest having people show up for your is the biggest complement besides buying your art.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Art, Community and education. Art has always been a safe haven for me. It grounds me and helps me reflect. I love to share my art with my community and also teach classes. With every class I learn something myself! Art is growth!
