We recently connected with Albert Manero and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Albert, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
I was driving in the car and there was a radio interview with the developers of the first 3D printed mechanical hands. I was really inspired by their story and reached out for how I could participate. A local family later reached out to ask if I could help build their son a bionic arm. I quickly put together a team and we went to work building it. Fast forward to today, we are now a full non-profit based at the University of Central Florida and working through clinical trials to develop and evaluate the next generation of bionic arms.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
At Limbitless, we strive to develop artistic bionic limbs that are equal parts function and expression. Each device is a tool that can be used to support every day tasks, while the artistic components magnetize for easy swapping of designs and paint finishes. Re-imagining what prosthetics can look like, from their older “doll plastic” style to the new highly vivid colors and design is something we hope will transform the field of prosthetics.
Have you ever had to pivot?
My academic training was in aerospace and mechanical engineering, with a focus on high temperature aerospace composites. Many of my colleagues at Limbitless also were in unique fields and we have all had to translate that knowledge and process and bring it with us to bio-medical devices. The pivot was certainly accompanied with a large learning curve, but has been quite a journey.
Can you open up about how you managed the initial funding?
As a non-profit, the community support has been critical to our team growing our impact and scale. We are very grateful for all the support from our corporate partners and philanthropic partners that have joined us in our efforts to change the stigma around limb differences and support new accessibility technology development.
