We were lucky to catch up with Billy Guan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Billy, appreciate you joining us today. Talk to us about building a team – did you hire quickly, how’d you recruit the first few team members? Any interesting lessons?
Initially, I started off as a personal producer for many years. I did not have a team in place. I tried to put a team together in place but people either left, never got certified, or did not want to do the work that was required of them. I got tired of having to restart and try to get people motivated so that I just went off and became as successful as I could as a Solo financial consultant. I hit the charts, closed the deals, connected with clients, won some of the top awards in the entire company alone. Something that is very difficult to do even with a team, I accomplished on my own.
But as I got older and started a family, I realized that I needed to scale and expand or else it would always be me out hunting and I would not have time with my family. So I started working on building a team because I now had the experience to know what to do and who to do it with.
The great thing about my financial firm is that there is a Standard Operating Procedure in place to systematize onboarding. So it really takes the guessing game out of the picture. Any new agent that I am onboarding, I just tell them to follow the system and to practice the scripts and procedures because it is duplicatable and scalable.
If I was restarting today, I would go straight into team building. Solo Producing was great, but it gets tiring if everything is dependent on me to close the deals. Having a team allows me to take a step back but still have leverage to scale my business.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am in the Financial Services industry as a Financial Consultant. I work with clients to help them with things like Retirement Planning, Wealth Accumulation, Asset Protection, and Estate Planning. We utilize financial vehicles such as IRAs, Roth IRAs, Investment accounts, and Executive Retirement Plans to help our clients create the best Tax Free retirement portfolio that makes the most sense to the client.
What separates us from the competition is that we use EVERY Financial tool available to help our clients achieve their goals. Most financial advisors only tell clients to invest in one or two type of financial vehicles, which puts them at risk for market downturns. My goal is to make sure that my clients never lose money that they cannot afford to lose.
I am extremely proud that I was able to work with a lot of high profile content creators and influencers on their financial plans. I am behind the scenes of course, but through this I was able to meet and connect with a lot of amazing business people and entrepreneurs.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Being a sincere, honest, empathetic, and kind individual with integrity is CRUCIAL to my success. I work with a very niche group of spicy creators that are already very stigmatized financially so I do my best to make the client feel comfortable in working together with me. There’s never any pressure to work together with me because I want the client to feel comfortable and confident with me every step of the way. It’s a partnership, and the only way that it works is if we work together to accomplish their financial goals.
A lot of my clients feel that way about me, so they are happy to shout me out or refer me to their network of colleagues.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for me has been to deliver world class experience to clients that do not know what to expect from working with a financial consultant. Because my name is my business, I have to make sure that the client is always excited and feels positive working together with me. Reputation is everything when you are working with people’s livelihoods.
So for me, I always aim to deliver results and educate my clients so that they feel empowered to make better financial decisions. And because I am able to help them achieve their goals, they are happy to recommend me to their peers and colleagues.
