We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jon Remmel a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jon, appreciate you joining us today. One of the toughest things about progressing in your career is that there are almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
I call unexpected problems or issues “curve balls” and I have come to expect them daily. I even call them out loud when they occur so I can remind myself, “this too shall come to pass.” This morning, it was a server related issue and the Court cancelling a last minute hearing. Curve balls are inherent in any business. Learn to hit the curve ball.

Jon, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jon Remmel, and I own a boutique personal injury law firm in Las Vegas, Nevada. I’ve built my practice around being direct, personable, and genuine—qualities I believe every client deserves. I also like to make people laugh and smile along the way.
You won’t find me in a fancy suit or posing in front of a sports car. If you drop by my office, you’ll probably see me at my desk in a concert T-shirt, surrounded by skateboard art and good energy. I’m not in this business for show. I’m here to do what’s right for my clients and work relentlessly to get them the results they deserve. Like Elvis, we “Take Care of Business” (TCB) every single day.
The most rewarding part of my job is the moment a client says “thank you.” I’ve watched people rebuild their lives—buy homes, secure their families’ futures, and express their gratitude with tear-filled eyes. Those moments remind me why I do what I do.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As a high school sophomore, I was told that my “only shot” at a post-secondary education was to join the military. I have deep respect for the men and women who serve—my father and father-in-law are both Veterans—but that narrow prediction became the spark that pushed me to prove there were more paths available.
After high school, I served a two-year voluntary mission for my church. It was challenging, humbling, and transformative. I learned grit, discipline, how to communicate with all kinds of people, and the value of showing up every day. When I returned home, I enrolled in a local college and completed my bachelor’s degree in three years. Two weeks later, I began law school at the S.J. Quinney College of Law in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Despite earning my place there, I often felt alone. I wasn’t the top 10%, I wasn’t on law review, and I didn’t define my worth by those metrics. Instead, I found my voice. I asked hard questions, pushed back when something didn’t make sense, and discovered that thinking creatively about the law excited me more than chasing traditional accolades. (Shoutout to Professor Dyer, who once joked that the fastest way to end a lease is to “take a hammer to the toilet and make the place uninhabitable.”)
My résumé didn’t look like everyone else’s—but that became my strength. Law school is where I first realized that stepping outside the box isn’t a weakness. It’s an asset. And it’s the foundation of how I practice today.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
In more than two decades of practice, I’ve never taken out a loan to run my firm. I’ve always believed in working within your means and refusing to overextend yourself. Pay your bills when they show up. Keep things simple. And make sure you can sleep at night knowing you’ve saved enough to keep the doors open for at least six to twelve months—no panic, no scrambling, just steady, responsible growth.
