We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful James Nissen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with James below.
Hi James, thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I still don’t make a full time living just making music, and that’s definitely a challenge. But I’m the most fulfilled
when working on music, playing music, and listening to music. I’ve worked regular full time jobs here and there, and that was always the most depressing times of my life. I realized a long time ago that though getting a regular job and just focusing on making money and paying bills seems like an “out” from the struggle to make a career from creative endeavors, that doesn’t fulfill me or make me happy. So there’s really no choice but to keep making music and enjoy the process.

James, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is James Nissen, I make music happen. My brother Ben and I make up the indie rock band “Eucalyption.” We’ve been recording and releasing music since 2018. We’ve played shows all over Houston and worked with several other Houston bands including “Vortxz” and “Zegovia.” We’re currently recording new music with Calvin Venus, a producer and engineer that runs “A Safe House” recording studio on the west side of Houston. These songs will be released early 2026 and will mark a new chapter for Eucalyption. We can’t wait for everyone to hear what we’ve been working on.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
There’s such a massive benefit from being connected to other like-minded people. And the best way to do that in the music world is to go to shows and hang out with people. I wish I did more of this earlier on.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
“The Creative Act: A Way of Being” by Rick Rubin is a great and easily digestible read for anyone doing anything remotely creative.
