We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Derica Wilson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Derica below.
Derica, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you manage your own social media?
I manage my own social media accounts. Social is my primary way of reaching potential clients. I treat social media like a full-time job beside being a photographer. My main social media accounts are: Instagram, Facebook, and now TikTok. Social Media is a very important part of my marketing strategy. Social media is an affordable, effective way to generate traffic, and can reach so many people very fast and efficiently. To capitalize on what social media has to offer, you need to study the trends, have a dedicated social media marketing strategy, be ready to create unique posts and have the time to engage with fans and followers. I try to at least post once a day. Regardless of how many likes and shares I may receive. Even if you reached only 300 people. That’s 300 new potential clients. I encourage anyone who has a business to have several social media accounts. Please follow me at @dwilsonphotography.

Derica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Derica Wilson. I am the owner and founder of D.Wilson Photography & Media Productions. My company specialize in shooting Maternity Photography and Family Portraitures. I have been in the Photography Industry for 10+ years. As a child growing up, I’ve always had an interest in being an artist. I am a self-taught photographer. My passion for photography began when my daughter was born. My husband then boyfriend bought my first DSLR after expressing my interest. From there, I began taking photos of my friends and family. I remained consistent and continued to practice as much as possible. After attending Georgia State University and receiving my degree in Fine Arts. I worked as an Insurance Agent for several years while still pursuing my photography part time. Right before pandemic began, I learned the most surprising news that I was expecting triplet babies.I could not believe I had three babies growing inside of me. Initially, I felt very scared deep down and nervous.
My husband and I both knew we would have to make some changes because our family was growing from four to seven with our three baby boys. We both had to make a change and figure out the best decision for our family. I felt deep down becoming a full-time photographer would be the best decision. During the peak of the pandemic, I took a leap of faith and took a bet on myself that I could do this. After having the babies, I decided to return to shooting during the holiday season. I was completely floored on how successful I became in such little time. It was the confirmation that I need that to know that I made the right decision.
After having a high-risk pregnancy and carrying three babies at once. I began to feel an incredible admiration and appreciation for the whole process of motherhood. My new focus would be maternity photography. Where I offer glorious queen-like maternity portraits and a moment of beauty and empowerment to pregnant women wanting to remember that time of their lives forever. My goals are to provide an unforgettable experience and bring the best out of my clients in photographs. I pride myself on being very patient with myself. It’s very hard being a mom of 5, a wife, and a business owner. Just turning a passion into a business, it’s sometimes hard but very rewarding.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
What I feel has helped my reputation in my market is word or mouth and social media. I truly care about my clients’ experience with me. I try my best to make sure my clients have a positive experience by being caring, simple, and efficient. I receive a lot of new clients from word of mouth based on my clients expressing how great their experience was while working with me. The second thing is social media because I am a photographer. Instagram and similar apps are photo-based. It very easy to showcase my work and allow others to see my work consistently.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is being an inspiration to others and women empowerment. Knowing that what I do has the ability to make women feel beautiful, make them feel better and more confident, I believe that’s the main thing that I feel is most rewarding to see them come in nervous and leave more confident. We can be very hard on ourselves as women especially when you’re pregnant, and you don’t feel that amazing. It’s beyond the picture for me.
