Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Larry Chang. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Larry, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on recently is with the Denver Immersive Repertory Theater (D.I.R.T.). It’s been such an exciting opportunity to help shape a new business model for the theater world—one that merges storytelling, technology, and interactivity in a way that really redefines what live performance can be.
My background is deeply rooted in game audio and VR experiences, so bringing that expertise into a theatrical environment has been both challenging and inspiring. I’ve been exploring how immersive audio design can guide audience movement, influence emotion, and shape narrative space in real-time. It feels like being part of a revolution—helping to reimagine the future of theater while giving audiences something truly memorable and spatially alive.
Another project that stands out is ObeeWAN, where I served as an audio consultant, helping to develop tools that use sound to influence and monitor Queen Bee behavior. The goal was to create a more efficient workflow for beekeepers by using audio triggers and data analysis. It’s a completely different world from entertainment, but it opened my eyes to how audio can have functional and ecological applications—bridging art, science, and sustainability. Both projects remind me that sound has endless potential beyond what we traditionally imagine.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Larry Chang. I am a NYC-based composer, sound designer, immersive audio designer, and technologist with over a decade of experience in game audio, film, and interactive media. My journey began in music—I studied business at National Taiwan University and later earned a Master of Entertainment Technology from Carnegie Mellon University. Over time, I discovered my true passion lies in crafting emotional and spatial sound experiences that deepen storytelling and connect people through sound.
Through my studio, I work with game developers, filmmakers, and creative teams to bring their worlds to life through music, sound design, and technical audio implementation. I also consult on interactive projects—helping teams optimize their audio pipelines and build immersive systems that respond to player or audience behavior in real time.
What sets my work apart, I think, is the blend of artistry and technical precision. I’m just as comfortable designing a reactive audio system in game engines like Unity and Unreal Engine as I am composing a cinematic score or sculpting subtle ambient textures for an installation. My projects often live at the intersection of emotion, interactivity, and innovation—from VR documentaries like Journey through the Campes and The Price of Freedom to large-scale exhibitions like Beyond Van Gogh: A Life in Letters.
I’m proud that my work has been recognized at events like Sundance, GDC, and AWE, and honored with Golden Horse Award nominations for Best Original Score. But beyond the accolades, what matters most to me is collaboration—helping teams realize their creative vision through sound that truly resonates. I want people to know that Larrisim Studio isn’t just about producing sound—it’s about shaping experiences that move, immerse, and inspire.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
For me, growth has always come from authentic relationships and word of mouth. The creative world is built on trust—people want to collaborate with someone who not only delivers quality but also genuinely cares about the project’s success.
I make it a point to understand each client’s story and goals before jumping into production. That allows me to tailor solutions—whether it’s developing an audio system, creating a score, or designing spatial sound—to their specific needs and workflows. That level of care tends to build long-term partnerships rather than one-off gigs.
Another key strategy has been community involvement—speaking at conferences, mentoring emerging sound designers, and engaging in XR and game audio circles both in Taiwan and internationally. Sharing knowledge not only helps others but also builds visibility in a natural, meaningful way. It’s not about marketing myself aggressively—it’s about building trust, giving value, and letting good work speak for itself.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is seeing how sound can transform someone’s experience—how it can make them feel something they didn’t expect, or connect them more deeply to a story or space.
There’s a special kind of magic when a player, audience member, or even a collaborator reacts with genuine emotion to a moment you’ve designed. That’s when you know the invisible work of sound has done its job—it’s touched them without needing to announce itself.
I also find joy in the collaborative process. Every project teaches me something new—about technology, people, or the art of listening itself. Being an artist means constantly exploring, learning, and growing, and that endless curiosity is what keeps me inspired.
